don't know what to major in

so im a freshman in college and I feel so lost and confused because I can’t decide what to major in. I finished my gen ads in high school and I started undeclared, switched to political science, then pre nursing. and now I’m taking the nursing pre reqs and I absolutely hate it because science is not my best subject. But the only reason I did nursing is because I knew I would find a job after graduation. I love political science but my friends and family said that it was useless pursuing it. (especially my family because they don’t want to see me doing any liberal arts degree). I go through the major catalog at least twenty times a day trying to pick a major that interests me but I can’t because I feel like its too late to begin a new major. (freshman year is basically over). any advice would be much appreciated

If you have completed most of your gen eds already, you have plenty of time. Pick a few classes for next semester that sound interesting and try them out. If you like poly sci, what about things like international studies/affairs, foreign policy, communications, criminal justice, etc? Paired with a minor in foreign language or other complimentary field, poly sci sets you up well for lots of jobs in government, private sector and non-profit.

Liberal arts degrees are not useless if you go to grad school or you want to teach. Do NOT pursue something that you do not love–you will end up hating it and wasting time and money. As @momof2lefties said, you can always pursue a career in government, especially if you pair it with a minor. If you are not sure, you can always take it slow to save money while figuring out what you want. Just please please do not rush into a major that you will not enjoy. Best of luck!

Pursue what you love. If you love Political Science, major in that.

Poli Sci could set you up for a career in government, international relations, law, political oddsmaking, polling (paired with Communications), as a Poli Sci professor, at a PAC, as a lobbyist, or any number of office jobs.

thanks for your replies

thanks for your help!

What activities did you enjoy in HS? What do you do with your spare time?

What draws you to Poly Sci? Would you consider law?

And you don’t have to go to graduate school to work with a BA in political science, either. You can if you want, but you can also find a job - as long as you do things like develop skills and maybe do an internship and/or a part-time job.
