hi guys. so im a junior in highschool and i have a question about EC's.

in school there are sports but i never particpated till now (Varsity fencer) anyways for since my freshie year i have been practicing MMA at tiger schulmanns and tennis outside of school.

are those weak ECs since there out of school? or are they strong EC?

i know overall there still weak cause they are sports and lots of people play sports

Most universities are looking for what ECs you’ve done since 9th grade, unless it’s something significant. (Winning an international competition)

umers - I think that most colleges look at sports as a way of determining how much time you spent on activities outside of school, ability to participate in group activities, discipline, well-roundedness, etc. So participating in a sport outside of school would hold the same weight as participating in a school sport.

The colleges that care about sports and EC’s in general are trying to avoid admitting applicants who don’t do anything but sit in their room and study all of the time. Those types of applicants may be able to do the coursework, but tend to have trouble succeeding outside of academics because they lack the skills that are crucial for succeeding in the real world.
