After a BIG downsizing last year, this year’s birthday wish was for an experience. I asked D to take me on the Nashville edition of the Underground Donut Tour. Here it’s a walking tour in the downtown area with stops at 4 doughnut shops. First stop was a croissant type donut place, 2nd stop a biscuit place where we got biscuit beignets, etc. Third stop was a creme filled brioche donut which I brought home with me and haven’t tried yet. Last place was a cake based place called Donut Distillery with lots of icing options.
They have these tours in lots of large cities in North America and also in London & Dublin. Anyone else done one? Being Nashville, we had more out of towners than in town folks on the tour (and being Nashville, we had one group of bachelorettes). Lots of country music trivia and Nashville architectural details that allude to the music industry thrown in as tidbits on our walk.
Thought I would also ask here, what’s everyone’s favorite donut? I lean towards maple icing, so the maple pecan croissant donut this morning was my favorite.
Have not done one, have seen them advertised, would totally do one of reasonable length!
Oh, and fav donut? Can’t give a fav but maybe a top 3….
Raspberry glazed cake stick (rectangle stick shape, cake donut injected with a raspberry filling and glazed
Persian - cinnamon based yeast, with vanilla frosting and chopped nuts
A FRESH Apple fritter
(Also can’t turn down a good cake donut with chocolate frosting)
In my youth, I loved jam filled donuts; these days, I prefer sugar raised (no filling), and here’s a little tidbit, if you have Winchell’s near you, you’ll get 10% discount with your AAA card!
Raised chocolate frosted from the little donut shop nearby. If you get their Long John, they’ll fill it with whipped cream for a little extra. I much prefer raised to cake style.
But I can’t resist Top Pot when visiting Seattle. And a properly made fresh beignet is irresistible.
That sounds like my kind of birthday. I love donuts, least favorites are any filled donut. We have a couple of artisan shops and a few favorite combos are passion fruit with toasted coconut (brioche style) ,blood orange with guava. I love a cinnamon crumb both cake or raised. My all time favorite from growing up is a cake donut with orange frosting. My son will sometimes get me one for my birthday.
When I was on jury duty I’d hit up the artisan shop near the courthouse on my break. Sadly my husband doesn’t share my donut passion.
We have a really good donut shop near us that does a raised donut with marzipan filling and an almond sugar glaze that is to die for. They also have a pistachio which is a close second.
I cannot tell you how much I love donuts. Raised with white icing and coconut; a “Bismark” or “long john” topped with nuts; croissant donuts; Cronuts; pretty much any kind of donut and I am going to want it. A donut tour sounds right up my alley. I simply cannot resist them and don’t want to!
I’ve never heard of this either but, hey, why not? Haven’t had a donut in years either but I’d probably go for a Boston crème or a raspberry jelly-filled.
Correction: I had a warm apple cider donut at an apple orchard last fall. It was decadent.
Can’t remember the last time I had a donut, probably when I was still working - in the ED break room!
Sugar raised were always my favorite, followed by Boston creme.
I’d only eat cinnamon or coconut cake style donut.
Powdered jelly stick or simple glazed donut. We have a local shop that makes THE best donuts, but you have to get there before 7:30 because they sell out.
At stop #1 we got a whole donut, but after that there were small servings. I threw away a few bites from the bottom of donut #1 and then with nibbles of small portions thereafter, ate the equivalent of 2 large donuts over the course of 2+ hours. We walked a few miles along the way. More sugar than I would typically have, but fun for a one-off.
I enjoyed interacting with the group and sampling some downtown donuts. While I’ve been coming to Nashville for 20+ years and living here for 9 months, this was only the second time I’ve ventured downtown since my move, so fun to be in the thick of Broadway and the spontaneous music, etc. I’ve been downtown many times when visiting, but unless someone else is doing the driving & parking, not tempted to venture down for big events.
