I think raised is the same as yeast. Not cake.
I haven’t heard of the donut tour, but my SIL would be first in line if she heard about one in Atlanta.
My safe favorite is Boston cream, but there is a small donut chain in a town on the way to my cottage that makes an unbelievable blueberry cheesecake donut. We only stop once in a blue moon, because we try not to eat stuff like that … but when we do, I thoroughly enjoy every bite!
Me too!!
Apparently you’re supposed to be on only one side!
It’s been a long time since I had a donut, but I can almost taste some of my favorites. As a child, it was French crullers from a mom & pop bakery we visited in my dad’s hometown. Later, it was lemon filled donuts (second only to lemon meringue pie on my birthday wish list) in FL. Chocolate raised with chocolate frosting took the lead next until I had McKenzie’s buttermilk drops in NOLA. Harris Teeter used to make delicious - and huge - apple fritters at a store near us, but when we visited years later they were just run of the mill. A little donut shop near our former home made maple bacon raised donuts that were worth every calorie.
Alas, San Diego is not on the list.
We have to make our own tour. Ooh, maybe that should be the CC meetup!
Glad I’m not the only one who has never heard this term!
We have an amazing local donut place where my favorites are Boston crème and just a simple/basic glazed donut.
Let me book my flight!
Krispy Kreme are yeast doughnuts. Dunkin’ are cake doughnuts. Krispy Kreme do not have “more chew”. They melt in your mouth. So light and fluffy chewing is barely required.
OMG! True story, I wrote an essay about a trip I want to take with my big brother…
In Search of the Elusive Jelly Donut
One day I’m going to write a book and it’s going to be called In Search of the Elusive Jelly Donut. It’s mostly a travelogue documenting my search for the jelly donut from my youth.
My Dad was a cop. Cops love donuts. And coffee. Need a cop? Go to the nearest donut shop. Often you’ll find several. Once I was walking in New York City, and I heard several police sirens and saw 2 police cars fly around a corner and stop. I stopped to watch. Three officers jumped out of their cars and walked briskly into the store on the corner. I walked past and looked in the window. The officers were in line. Waiting. I looked up, Dunkin’ Donuts. I swear. I took pictures to prove it. (See below)
Anyway, back to my book.
When I was a kid my Dad (the cop) would bring home all sorts of things that business owners on his “beat” would give him. Cases of soda, boxes of lollypops, cases of Oreo cookies (another story, about the time my brother and I ate our way through a case of Oreos. I can’t quite look at an Oreo the same way anymore). Somewhere along the line my Dad (the cop) would bring home large pink boxes tied with white string, and filled with donuts. Not just one box, but several. While the cinnamon crumb and the white powdered sugar ones were good (very good), the jelly donuts were pure heaven. The dough was dense but not heavy, they were lightly frosted with a sugary glaze, and the jelly inside was amazing. Real jelly. Not the gel that is used today, and called jelly. This was raspberry jam complete with seeds. Try as I might, I have never found a jelly donut that matched this donut.
Where these donuts came from, I will never know. I have no one to ask since both of my parents are dead. I thought about asking my mother on her death bed, but by then she could only see out of one eye, and was often thinking I was my brother. I wasn’t sure I could trust her to give me the right information. She might call out “rosebud” and then where would I be?
My book, In Search of the Elusive Jelly Donut will document my travels throughout the US as I search for that true icon of American breakfast treats, the jelly donut.
There is a mom and pop donut place near our house that makes incredible donuts. They will fill the insides to order (fruit fillings, custards, crème, etc) and all their donuts are divine.
I must also admit though, that if I happen to drive by a Krispy Kreme and the red donut sign light is on, it’s hard to drive by and not get donuts hot off the rack. Simply divine.
Top Pot donuts rule here in my neck of the woods. Good stuff.
Sounds like a fun tour in Nashville! There is a donut tour in DC also so could be a good gift for my son and his wife down the line.
I still remember the donuts from the local mom and pop bakery in my town when I was growing up. Honeymooners- yeast donut with chocolate glaze with swirled cream in the center(on top, not inside the donut). Also, yeast donut with white glaze and cherry filling in the middle (also on top). Wish that place was still around!
@jym626 , I also really like Krispy Kreme, glazed and the raspberry filled ones too.
I just read this thread and I want a donut, and I can’t get a donut, and I hate you all!
Oh, fresh plain cake donuts with powdered sugar.
Then fresh apple cider donut with sugar.
I still want a donut.
Oh, now you’re done it. I forgot all about the freshly made sugared donuts at the cider mill. Now that’s all I can think about!
Who has made donuts? Hanukkah or otherwise? I have made cake donuts - often pumpkin - but baked and truth be told, fried IS so much better. I’d like to try a yeast drop donut.
D wanted to go to the Donut Distillery when we were in Nashville, but we couldn’t make it happen unfortunately
My favorite is the Boston Creme donut. Not fond of jelly donuts. H used to stop at the Krispy Kreme on his way back from the airport and bring several of those “fresh-made” donuts - kids absolutely loved them!
Loved the malasadas at a portugese bakery in Hawaii…
I am generally a yeast (raised) donut person and can turn down a cake donut without a second thought, but the cake donuts at Donut Distillery were delightful. Hope you get another opportunity for your D to try
I have made (cake) apple cider donuts, but they are not as good as the ones fresh from the cider mill with the bees buzzing your cider cup.
I prefer yeast donuts. Stop making me think about them!
I have probably made these exact same ones! Do you have the donut baking pan?
