Dorm and Meal Plan

It was interesting. The teacher was really cool and there wasn’t much writing. You don’t generally take your Arts of Expression until your second or third year.

Well for the first quarter, as a freshmen, your advisor chooses your schedule. After all the current students register for the fall, they register all the freshmen. Like I said, it may change with the new registration, but if it stays the same your department will pick classes for you. You are free to change them when you start, but since everyone is registered already its not always easy to find an open class.

In the rest of the quarters, registration order is determined by year level, then a random generator. You get a date and time to sign in and pick your classes, and if the ones you want are open then you get them. (This is the new system so I haven’t used it yet. The old system was worse though, everyone in a certain year level signed in at the same time and the system tended to crash.)

I’m glad that RIT has a variety of liberal art classes to choose from, rather than forcing students to take a specific history, science or math, etc.

Yeah, the chances of me being able to switch my classes are unlikely because I’m sure all the students want the interesting classes. But I am interested in a lot of the classes offered.

So in fall, the advisers choose our schedule - and then in winter and spring, we get a date and time to pick our classes? I thought liberal arts classes were the whole year?

Keep in mind that the RIT laundry rooms are in the tunnel system that connects all dorms. So if the laundry right under your building is full…you just walk to the next one. The post office and student mailboxes are down there too, and not under your particular dorm, as is the store where you can buy anyghint from fresh fruit/veggies to personal items.

Oh, thanks for that extra information. I’ll probably check out all the dorms when I get a chance to visit.

Also, there’s a store underground where I can buy food/groceries? I thought I had to go off campus to get groceries. If there’s a grocery connected to all the dorms, then I can choose a lower meal plan and just buy food and cook. (I’m thinking of bringing a mini fridge)

Yes, there is a place in the tunnels called the corner store where you can get a small selection of groceries. They have lots of stuff you can microwave for a quick meal, plus snacks and ice cream. The dorms all have microwaves but not much else to “cook” with. Many people do bring mini-fridges. The corner store takes debit, meal options, tiger bucks, cash, or credit (pretty much anything).

Interesting. I’ll probably buy a lot of cereal for breakfast, and some microwave dinners. Then I’ll stick with the 12 or 14 meal plan for eating at Gracies/other dining services.

The dorms don’t have any stoves?

Not any that I have been in. Trust me, the microwaves are enough of a fire hazard themselves. Our RAs gave us a pizza party every quarter that someone didn’t set off the fire alarm. People do dumb things.

Its not surprising that we don’t have stoves considering we can’t even have hot plates or Christmas lights (unless they are LEDs).

That’s understandable. I guess I’ll stick with cereal, hot pockets and frozen dinners. I think the Ultra Meal Plan is bad for me because GCCSI is so far from the dorms and Gracies. It’ll be troublesome to walk back 15 minutes for lunch and return for work/classes.

Unless I have a good schedule where it’ll work better…

Knowing about the underground corner store, I think I’ll go with the 10 meal plan. $416 on debit would allow me to eat a lot of meals closer to GCCSI.

But I have one last question, the 10 meal option is:
10 meals at Gracie’s 5 meals at any Dining area $416debit $1,497

For the debit, do I add in $416 to the $1,497, which means the plan will cost $1,900?
Or does the debit come out of the $1,497? The dining service part of the site doesn’t clarify.

The debit is part of the $1,497. So you are essentially spending $1,081 on the meals and then the rest is credited to your account as debit.

What makes debit different from tiger bucks is that it comes as part of your quarterly bill, meaning it is tax-free and can be paid by scholarship/loan same as your tuition. Tiger bucks are different because its like loading a prepaid card (purely for convenience, no other benefit).

Okay, that’s good to know. Thank you again!
