Dorm Cleaning

My DS will be a freshman living in Sutherland West. His room is one of the ones where just two rooms share a single bath. I know that they will have to clean their own bathroom and bring those supplies. TP is supplied. What about vacuums? Do they have them available on each floor or should we bring a small "broom" type vacuum (and hope it may get used once a month or so :) )? Does someone clean the common rooms on the floor and the hallways?

I read somewhere that each of the dorms have vacuums to borrow but I don’t know if this is true. DS got one of those Bissell sweepers and it did the job.

D1 lived in both Forbes Hall and Panther Hall. At both dorms, she (and her roomate) was (were) able to borrow a vacuum from the dorm to clean their room. (I don’t know if it was through the RA or what/whom they got the vacuum.)

You can borrow the vacuum but there’s only one per dorm if I remember correctly (and Sutherland is big!). You ask the guard at the front desk (at least that’s who we asked at Forbes). My recommendation is get a small vacuum with a hose attachment (for the hard to reach corners!) that you bring with you. It’s also helpful for vacuuming the carpet of your room, which gets dirty pretty easily. I got a vacuum at Bed, Bath and Beyond that was around $100 maybe and it lasted me 3 years.

I was in Holland, so this might not apply, but at the front desk, the vacuum for us to borrow was one of the simple restaurant ones that you rolled back and forth, and it didn’t have any actual suction.

I borrowed a friend’s vaccuum, and chances are you could do the same, but if you want one of your own I’d say go ahead and buy one. As long as you are space-conscious and don’t get a huge unnecessarily powerful Oreck, you won’t regret it.

We bought a vacuum for DD who lived in Sutherland her first year. She liked the idea of knowing what had been vacuumed up before. Apparently the wet/dry that was available for use was a bit gross. I did a Google search and bought a Hoover that was under $100. We donated it to Forbes-Craig when we left becuase it wouldn’t fit in the car!

The common rooms are cleaned by a service.

Thanks for asking this question! My son will also be in Sutherland West.

This is a very, VERY good point.
