Okay, so I was just wondering if going random for a roommate is advisable. or should I try to find one before hand?

A very large number of US college students now find roommates through facebook groups, etc. I would try that process, and if it doesn’t work, that’s fine.

You will have plenty of randomness with the people on your hallway, who will be a cross-section of all students. Some people try to get athletes as roommates, so they have the room to themselves on many days.

The U’s housing director said the most important issues are whether a student is a morning or a night person, and whether they are very neat or a slob.

I think you should just do random!

Also how are the first year dorms?! also any advice as to what to bring and what not bring?

I’d suggest starting with the UVa housing webpages, and then coming back here with your specific questions.

The Class of 2018 Facebook group is, from what I’ve been told, very active. Students in the past have created a survey in the document area of the group to help people matching.

Looking for a dorm with a piano. Are there any? Or is there any other piano non music students have access to just to play?

No dorms have pianos. There are practice rooms though. My friend used to practice at a local church also.
