Anyone doing this? My son's roommate's mom (who seems awesome, btw) is getting it for her son. Seems pretty reasonable (about $130/year) to cover the electronics, clothes, sporting goods, everything.

Here's what I'm looking at:
worthavegroup.com

I believe that your child’s “stuff” is covered under your homeowners policy. That’s what I’ve found for information online and what I was told for the past three years that he was in the dorms at boarding school.

As long as your student still uses your home address as their permanent address, their dorm stuff is covered under most homeowner’s policies. I would just check with your insurance agency to confirm!

Yes, I mentioned that on another thread, that you have to check your own policy and see if it is covered. But often the deductible is much higher on a homeowners policy, and so this additional insurance can still be a good idea given the relatively low value of the goods involved. If your child is taking anything that is especially expensive, such as a valuable musical instrument or, although I would discourage it, a valuable piece of jewelery, then those can be added to the college policy on a separate rider if you think it makes financial sense to do so.

Just checked with my plan and my son’s belongings would be covered at up to 10% of the overall coverage for my home. So, depending on what your homeowners $ coverage is, your child may already be covered at a decent amount.

As was yours, GreenWaveMama. I just got the renewal notice on Saturday and I had to make sure it covered her now that she is living off campus. Waiting for them to get back to me. She may have to switch to renters insurance, since that is now her primary address and she is no longer covered under our homeowners in any case. But her place came furnished, so the value of things she owns that are on-site there is still relatively small.

Hopefully this isn’t redundant info. I spoke with my insurance agent and originally he said my homeowners will cover my daughter. After I told him that she was going to school in New Orleans and how much the insurance cost, he said to definitely get it because of the possible hurricane threat and with the crime there. He also said we would get a break on our car insurance since she is going so far away without the car, so that may be something to look into.

Absolutely about the car. That was in the link that GWMama gave. We did that also, it saved a lot of money. She still doesn’t have her car in New Orleans, she doesn’t want the hassle (she is renting literally right across the street from campus, so distance not an issue). She has been working this summer in NOLA, and has done quite well taking the bus partway and riding her bike through City Park the remaining distance, which is a lovely ride.

That’s good to know, jozuko. Fortunately we have never actually had to use ours, so I really couldn’t give them any kind of review regarding their performance to claims.

Here’s a tip for down the road: S2 moved off campus this year. I had looked into it and found that he is covered through our existing policy as long as his permanent address is the same as ours. But when I was looking into CSI to see whether it applied off campus, I discovered that not only would they cover his personal property, they also offer liability coverage up to $100,000 (it must be a multi unit dwelling) for just over $50. Given the age of the property he is living in, I thought it was a good investment. $50 is a small price to pay for added protection. Just for future reference…

And one more thing: they have identity theft coverage up to $5,000 that is free with your personal property coverage, but you have to sign up for it, it is not automatic, so for those purchasing, make sure you don’t miss that step!

Thanks, kreative. I just found out the exact same thing about the off campus coverage, but the person I talked with didn’t mention the identity theft angle. I will make sure she gets that!

Looks like maybe I generated some business for CSI! Should I ask them for commissions? LOL.

Yes, you should! With two in college and one in med school, I just bought three different policies! I had considered it before, but never felt compelled really. The off campus move is what prompted me to look into it further, so now everyone is covered!

Since our homeowners insurance has a very high deductible , buying csi insurance was a great deal since it has a$50 deductible and covers also phones textbooks etc not only against theft but also accidental breakage, spillage, water damage (nola rain) Csi also waives deductible if the kids put teaching software on computer. Oldest sons computer got stolen in dc…no insurance…so I got burnt once

CSI is great. Daughter purchased policy last year as a freshman. Went to Bonnaroo music festival in June after school was out and her iPhone was stolen. They paid the claim quickly, in full, less the $50 deductible (and she had no police report since it was on the last night of the festival and they left later that same night). When the renewal came via email last month, she renewed!
