dorm necessities

Highly recommend micro and fridge. Also a shower caddy and shower shoes. Other things that I have waiting in my storage room for my dd’s return to school is a fan, printer, rug, over the door coat rack, bed risers, & tubs to go under the bed.

According to my rising junior D, a bag of disposable earplugs is an absolute necessity. She likes her bedside rug (a large-size fluffy bathroom rug), but that might be a girl thing.

Bed Bath & Beyond has a wonderful service for college students, especially if you’re a distance from the college. This saves packing and shipping hassle/cost, and is an easy way to deal with large bulky items: fan, mirror, garbage can, etc.

Sometime before you leave for school, you go into your hometown BB&B and tell them you want the dorm registry. They give you a gun, just like for bridal/baby registry, and you walk around the store and make your selections. When you get to the college town, you go into the BB&B there. Your items are brought to the cash register for you, already boxed up; you pay and go.

I just returned from BBB and the salesguy was trying to sell me so much unneeded stuff- My D is out of countrya nd just found out her roommate so can’t buy beddig yet- had planned to buy unbderbed storage, set of extra drawers, and a few things but called friend that went there last year and said no to several things- no risers. no underbed drawers-t ehya re supplies and no room for extra drawers- so i amde it home with a surge protector, over the door hook and desk lamp earlier today I bought an over the door shoe rack, and hanging jewelry organizer and collage frame- so hopefully I’ll just have beeding left and then they can decide who brings fridge/ TV

It looks like the sheets from Ikea, at least the flat ones, are plenty long enough, but I don’t want to make a big mistake since it’s basically a road trip there for us. Does anyone know if their sheets fit xl mattresses?

thanks!

it should say on package if they are XL or not- do not buy if it doesn’t say Twin XL

When my son went to college last year (second child) he was halfway across the country and we flew in. So we tried to pack very little and bought most of what he needed in the local community. He had his clothes, washed towels and sheets, quilt, laptop and Ipod, and enough toiletries for a trip. We shipped his bike. After we checked out the space and met the roommate- he had an amazing amount of overhead storage - we shopped for everything else. The storage containers were very different than what I would have bought, we realized he could have a larger mini fridge…etc. His dorm had AC (his in NC). I left him with gift cards for Target and grocery store (within two blocks) for the things we forgot. At parents weekend we filled in a few other things. Enjoy it’s an exciting time.

The others are right. Do NOT overpack. I can’t tell you how many freshman i’ve seen with so much stuff that you could hardly move.

Also BBB has a good bedbug repellent spray. Normally when i move in, i take it and spray the dorways and elsewhere.

Also a good broom would be a good idea.
