Dorm Organization

Hi,

I was just wondering if any of you (parents or students) had any dorm organization ideas that you would really recommend to anyone. I don't like a cluttery space, but obviously college dorms are tightfits. If you have any specific ideas or products that you think everyone should use/have - feel free to post them.

Thanks so much (and hopefully this will be a thread others use for advice too).

There are products in the A to Z thread that can help, but specifically cups to hold pencils and pens, bed risers to have more stuff under the bed, and desk files.

I had decorative jars and cups to hold things like makeup brushes, pens, and silverware. My roommate had this really awesome miniature cubby thing where she kept other school supplies like her calculator, scissors, etc.
Look around at office supply stores and you’ll find whatever you need.

Best thing my daughter got was in BBB (they have it elsewhere)…it is for the closet and makes an upper and lower rod (doubling the hanging space)…can’t remember what it’s called but it has been a life saver

Sounds like really good suggestions.

@Princessmahina, did you just get glass jars and decorate them, or would you recommend like plastic ones and then decorate them how you want to? It’ll end up being an art project for mom – she enjoys those things.

@Rodney, sounds really awesome. I’ll try to look around and find it because it sounds really really useful.

Thank you for your suggestions!

my roommate and I are getting a cubicle shelf thingy with open spaces where we will put those cloth drawer things to hold stuff neatly.

Those plastic storage bins work well and are easy to put away.

My daughter likes the hanger for shoes. It has about ten compartments for shoes and hangs in the closet.

the other thing my older D has found to be very useful is a cart with plastic drawers on wheels; she uses it for all the little stuff that she like to have handy and it doubles as a nighttable (she doesn’t loft her bed)…she has one with a wood-like top (which of course I can’t find for my younger D now)…

Obviously it is too big to transport (takes up too much valuable car space), but can be found at BBB, Target or Walmart…

I also think the Container Store carries it for those of you going to college near one…

More good suggestions to think about and compare what is best. The cart and the cubicle w/ plastic drawers sounds like it could be really easy to work around. I’d probably be better off just getting it in my college town instead of trying to maneauver it around the truck though.

I hear that fabric shelf thingy that hangs in the closet (has like 6 to 10 compartments) works really well, you can put anything in it from clothes, to shoes, to books etc.

Plus–the fabric shelf things also fold up small for storage and transportation.

I think that’s the biggest thing, is something that’s narrow and has a lot of space, but can also be transported and stored (over the summer) easily. Never anything worse than bulky storage solutions that dont have a lot of space and require a lot of work to move around.

I mostly used large beaded candle holders that my mom had laying around the house. They’re really easy to make and looked beautiful on my desk.

get some crazy furniture like this

[VideoBind.com - Remarkable Furniture](http://www.videobind.com/74.html)

I want that Murphy bed!

That furniture is SO cool.

One thing that’s always worked for me is: keep it simple.

Every organizational tool takes up space. Space is at a premium in a dorm room.

That said, while horizontal space is easy to find and utilize, vertical space is not. Milk crates and boxes have worked well for me when it comes to storage.

Thanks for your help. Good ole fashion milk creates.
