Dorm Questions

I am an incoming freshman and would love to stay in the mini suites, either at Unit 1 or 2. I just had a couple of questions:

1) What are the chances freshmen are assigned mini suites, if they are listed as a first preference?
2) Can we select who the other 2 or 3 ppl are in the suite, just like we can request roommates?
3) How much larger than the unit doubles are the mini suites?
4) Would the fact that my roommate is a Regents Scholar have any bearing on the housing assignment?
5) Are there any arrangements similar to mini suites at Foothill? I know they have suites, but I was wondering what the student:bathroom ratio was, in particular.

Thanks a bunch for your time guys. Your answers are always so helpful and informative.

I believe if you select people, you have a higher chance of getting the room you want.

Yea, choosing a roommate increases your chances of getting what you want.

if thats the case why doesnt everyone choose roommates?

I'm pretty sure that you cannot request the people who will be in the the other room if you are in a mini-suite. In Wada they will only give you information on your own roommate and nothing on the people in the other bedroom. They treat the multi-room dorms as if each room is a completely separate entity. When I sent them an e-mail asking if I could at least find out the names of the other people who I would be living with, they acted like it was some private matter. I think it's a little silly.

Let me try this:
1. There is a chance, not a big one, but a chance. I remember there was a guy from fall 2006 who said he was in a mini suite his freshman and sophmore year, and that it was not terribly uncommon. BUT, with Clark Kerr being remodeled, I think the chances this year will be slim to none. I'll be a soph and I got a mini suite in Unit 1 for fall.
2. No.
3. Same width but about 6' longer.
4. I don't know this, but I heard the answer is yes, better chance.
5. Kind of, in some only. Actually, they have it better because it's an actual suite with a lounge. vs. a hallway to the bathroom.

I don't see why you would want a suite your freshman year. You would miss out on meeting new people, and end up having less fun later on.

To answer #1, lemme tell you my experience. I really wanted a mini-suite in Clark Kerr or in the Units and applied for only that type of housing with my 5 choices. I also agreed to be placed elsewhere if I couldn't get assigned what I wanted. Big surprise, I didn't get what I wanted and am now at Foothill, a dorm that I didn't even consider. But it could be worse. I could be at Stern.

In conclusion, you have to be very lucky to get a mini-suite in the units. Why not just dorm at Foothill?

In all honesty, Foothill would be ideal for me and my roommate considering we're both EECS majors, and Foothill is so close to Cory and Soda. But, we are a little hesitant abt the 20 ppl to one bathroom situation. It seems like it's a tremendous hassle everyday. If anyone could share their experiences with shared bathrooms, esp at Foothill, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Bathrooms in Foothill are the best, imo. First of all, with the ratio, it'll only be around 10 other guys/girls or less. The bathrooms in Foothill are all single-gender. 2 shower stalls and 2 toliet stalls in each bathroom. Also, there are tubs, so it's easier to keep the floor dry. Whereas in the Units, everything gets wet even when you try hard to keep dry when changing clothes.

compSciBeast - If you're an EECS major and will be a Freshman in the Fall, then I wouldn't factor in your being EECS too much into deciding which dorm to get. As a Freshman you'll probably have little to no classes at Cory/Soda, at least I and some other EECS students I know didn't.

For Freshman year I'd suggest something more social, like one of the Units (non-suite). The bathroom thing isn't really a problem. There's 2 good shower stalls on our floor, but almost every time I have had access to a shower stall because people wake up at different times and shower at different times (mornings, nights, or not at all...). Whenever a shower stall isn't available and I don't feel like waiting a few minutes, I just go up 1 floor and shower there. The same applies for toilet stalls.
