Housing unfortunately is very nebulous on these questions, especially with Blackwell info, so I thought I would ask here.
- anyone know the dimensions of the desk in the room? I’ll assume that desks are pretty standard sized in all the rooms? They looked like 36” x 18” in Foothill and Unit 3 but not sure. My kid wants to bring his 28” monitor and printer and with his other toys I’m not sure if there’s enough real estate.
- is there a lockable drawer? Some place to put his retainer and medicine and maybe his headphones.
I think the desks (really a table with a separate 3-drawer cabinet that fits underneath) that wind up underneath bunks are very deep. Otherwise, I’d think pretty standard. I don’t know how many people will be in the room, but I can’t imagine there will be much space for a lot of stuff like this. Your S should coordinate with his roommate(s) because they can’t ALL bring printers and giant monitors. BTW, printers are all over the campus (in dorms, libraries, etc.) and either free or cheap, so I’m not sure what that gets him other than another thing to take up room. My D’s floor-mates’ father bought her this massive new printer, which I think got very little use for the amount of space it took up.
No lockable drawers as far as I can remember. I would invest in a safe with a cable lock to lock it to something that would make it difficult for someone to walk off with. We got one for my D to store her important papers, her laptop, purse, or anything else she wanted to keep secure. With sharing a room with one or more people (and other people potentially being in and out), it does give you a bit of piece of mind. There wasn’t anything permanent and solid she could cable it to, so she cabled it to the foot of the bunk bed and hid it under the very deep under-bunk “desk”.
Thanks…with him being in Blackwell, no one has a clue including the Housing people what dimensions are for the room or what is in each room or what is available on each floor. The only thing we know is that there is no cafeteria and each room is a double. Since we don’t live too far away I guess he can bring minimal stuff and go from there.
Put printers on top of the microwave/fridge/freezer you rent for 108$ from Microchill in the next month (coordinate with roommates, but it was nice).
No lockable drawers. No one that I know got a safe and it seems slightly overkill for a retainer that only one person can wear, medicine that only one person needs and headphones that the super CS guy a few doors down has a more expensive version of.
And now I admit that Clark Kerr Building 3 had a kleptomaniac in it last year who kept somehow getting into peoples rooms. She probably got expelled and the stuff returned though since she was definitely caught.
Storage real estate is pretty good. You can fit a lot of stuff, even more if you bring some big plastic boxes to store under the bed.
Haha my kid is that super CS guy with the headphones! I actually hopes he leaves it at home.
@Walter924 Ha, yeah, a safe is overkill, until it’s not and something goes missing. Then it’s suspicion, recriminations, etc. If it’s expensive medicine, or medicine some other kids would want (or are too stupid to know the difference), then I’d lock it up. The safe we got was well rated and maybe $60 or $70 on Amazon. When you are rooming with strangers, why set up the possibility of an unpleasant scenario by not having a way to secure stuff that is either expensive (like meds or high-end headphones) or pain to replace or both (like a retainer)? If I’m a parent who has to pay for replacing stuff, I might be interested in mitigating damages on the front end.
Certain types of prescription medication may be targeted by thieves due to its recreational use potential (e.g. ADHD medication).
I would also recommend a safe. I bet many had them but they were well hidden.
