dorm rooms

I was reading over this list of what's in each dorm room. Is there seriously only one dresser if I'm living in morrison? How would that work?

Twin-sized bed with mattress (2)
(Mattress sizes are 80” long, 36” wide, 6” deep)
• Desk and chair (2)
• Dresser (2) Suite-style halls contain one dresser.
• Window coverings (blinds or shades)
• Closet or wardrobe (2)
• Telephone outlet (1)
• Cable TV outlet (1)
• Computer network connections (2)
• Apartments include all of the above, plus
sofa, chair, dining table, and casual table

That's interesting....is this description for all dorms or just Morrison? My d was in as suite-style dorm last year (Craige North) and they definitely had two dressers in each room (one per person).

Also, don't the four older dorms on South have built-in dresser units? I wonder if Morrison is still this way after renovation. You may call housing, because this definitely affects packing and the possibility you will need to buy more underbed plastic storage bins.

They replaced all the built-in furniture in Morrison with modular furniture according to something I read recently in the DTH.

Could it be in the newly configured Morrison if you are in one of the new triple suites you have your own bedroom so one dresser per bedroom? Don't know for sure but it would make sense.

The only other thought is that they have gone to a taller dresser to take up less floor space with eight drawers and each roommate has four drawers.

It was in the moving to carolina brochure and it refers to all dorms. So the one dresser is not what's been in dorms in years past? That's really strange that they would say that.

Dorm construction nearing completion
By: Katie Loeffler, Staff Writer

After being under construction for more than two years, the Morrison Residence Hall renovation is almost complete.

According to Lindsey Hopkins, the UNC Construction Manager for the Morrison project, the residence hall is in the "final punch list phase," where the building is checked to make sure that it is ready for final inspections.

"(Morrison) is a week from final inspections," Hopkins said.

Hopkins, along with Larry Hicks, director of housing and residential education, agreed that the project will be completed before students move in for the 2007 fall semester.

"Morrison is full for next year," Hicks said. "We had high demand for Morrison."

He also said that before Morrison went under construction, the residence hall was one of the most requested residence halls on campus.

Many changes have been made to Morrison in the renovation process.

The residence hall has several new energy-efficient additions, such as a solar hot water system on the roof that will help heat water in the residence hall, more energy efficient windows and monitors throughout the building to check to the use of utilities.

Morrison has also undergone several design modifications, including the elimination of large built-in wall units. The units will be replaced by free moving dressers and desks.

A two-story lobby floor with natural lighting and glassed-in common areas on all floors also has been added.

Central air conditioning and heating was put throughout the residence hall, with thermostats in rooms so students can control the temperature.

Morrison also will have a cyber lounge and a media room with pool tables and a large projector.

The Sustainability Learning Community, a new learning community focused on recycling, energy use and other aspects of sustainable living will be located in Morrison.

The learning communities previously found in Carmichael Residence Hall will be relocated to Morrison.

How much bigger are the directional South campus dorms than the regular ones on south campus?

get - are you asking about individual dorm rooms or the dorms as a whole?

Room sizes are pretty comparable I think. My d's dorm room on North campus will be maybe a few feet smaller than her room in Craige North last year. The layout is better in the new dorms on South with the closets along the same long wall as the bathroom door which allows you to arrange beds further away from each other.

Re: overall size, the directionals on South are not huge like the older South campus dorms. They seem similar to many of the North campus dorms...three stories and accommodate a similar number of students. I think Spencer and Cobb on North are larger than most North campus dorms though. But Kenan, McIver, Alderman, Ruffin, the Olds, etc.... are all not big massive dorms.

sorry I didn't read the rest of the posts, but in reference to the dresser,

if the room has 1 dresser then that dresser is a large dresser with 2 halves. The drawers in the dressers are typically large so you and your roommate can decide on how you want to divvy up the drawers.

the rooms aren't huge so don't expect to bring everything you own. freshmen always bring way too much stuff to college. Take what you will need and probably wear until Fall break when it begins to get colder. then bring home your summer clothes and take your winter clothes to school to help save room.

Thanks topgun, that's exactly what I needed to know.

ldmom, I meant more of a comparison between, ie. HJ North and regular HJ.

Directional dorm rooms average 12x18 and if furniture is placed carefully can be very spacious. The room I recall seeing in the old Morrison seemed to be smaller. I thought rrom dimensions were on the floor plans on the housing tour but I could be wrong.

sorry get...I totally misread your question. The old dorms are much bigger than the new directionals on South. Nine or ten stories compared to three to four.

DO all dorm rooms have carptet? If yes, howz their qulaity?

Directional dorms have no carpeting, that's all I know for sure.

ldmom, haha o dear im just not being very clear in my question...its my fault. i meant big as in room sizes. lol third times a charm?

oh...lol!! get...yes third time is a charm.

All I know is this...the directionals have probably the biggest double room sizes on campus at 12x18. My d tells me the older South campus dorm rooms 'feel' smaller, but that likely because of the built-in wall units. Available floor space should be pretty comparable. As eadad mentions, Morrison, the one renovated older South campus dorm doesn't have the built-ins anymore, so I bet those room dimensions are pretty comparable to the directionals.

haha thanks ldmom! and thanks for alwaysss answering my questions...i seem to have tons! :P

ANYtime get! Ask away!
