Dorm situation for incoming freshmen

Son just accepted to Stony Brook and it’s high on his list. Of course, still awaiting other results before making a decision. Have to say one of the things that makes us hesitant is the housing situation. I know a multitude of freshmen were tripled this year and about 200 students were even forced to dorm at a college in Shirley LI and take a bus to Stony Brook every day, a situation that we would find completely unacceptable and intolerable. So I’d really like to know if the situation is anticipated to be the same this Fall. This can really be a determining factor in our decision and it appeared that last yesr the students were not informed until after they had made their commitments which is really quite underhanded. Chris at admissions if you can weigh in on this I would appreciate it. Would also love to hear from current freshman about what their experience has been like. If they started out tripled, have they been detripled by now, etc? Thanks.

Good questions. First of all, the Brookhaven housing was a transfer option, not a freshman one; so that’s off the table. Freshmen are only housed at the main campus.

We do anticipate a lot of tripling this year, as we won’t be opening the new buildings until Fall 2016. Honestly, we won’t know how much until all the deposits are in. We try to detriple as quickly as we can, and although I don’t know the stats this year, in most years, there’s usually a good number of students who opt to remain tripled even when offered the detriple, so it’s not always as awful as it might sound.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you have further questions.

Thank you Chris. So are you saying that most kids are detripled by a certain time unless they chose not to be? I’d be curious to know what the actual percentage was of kids in the freshman class who were tripled at the beginning of the year as compared to those who were not (who were the lucky few to not have this). and how many remain tripled now. Also awaiting word on whether he will qualify for honors, which I assume means a better housing situation (no tripling?).

My son started SB this year and is housed in a suite. He has one roommate. There are two guys in one room and there were three in the other. There are three bedrooms and a bathroom in each suite. The room with three was detripled in October.

Good to know Lila. Thanks

I checked with Res Life – about 70% of our new students were tripled at the start of the year. Of that group, 15% have chosen to remain tripled (which has been pretty consistent from year-to-year), and about a third are still tripled now – so about half were detripled over the course of the semester. Hope this helps!

Chris

Yes thank you. It’s also very possible that this will be less of an issue for my son than it is for me. He doesn’t seem all that concerned about it!

@sbuadmissions‌ Hi Chris, when will the next batch of decisions be released? I heard people have received their decisions already.

We’re going in small batches every two weeks or so. Haven’t heard when the next round will be, but probably next week or thereabouts.
