dorm situation

does anyone know if you have to move off campus after sophmore year? or can you dorm on campus thru senior year? i hear dorm space is limited...

You can live on campus after freshman year, but it’s not easy. If you have a good appointment time you can get a spot, but if you don’t then you’re SOL. I know a lot of people that got screwed over this year by housing.

does being in Honors College help with regard to housing or is that a myth?

For freshmen or upperclassmen? For freshmen, if you apply to be in the honors living learning community in the honors dorm, you’re most likely going to get in there. I don’t really think it matters if you’re in the HC for any other dorm on campus.

For upperclassmen, I don’t think it helps all that much. If you apply to be in honors housing after your freshman year, your appointment time is a lot sooner than everyone else’s, but I don’t know what your options are for rooms. You might only be able to pick honors housing (HRH and the Horseshoe apartments). And I know people who didn’t get housing even though they’re in the HC because the dorm and the Horseshoe filled up.

I wish I could tell you more, but I didn’t go through this process this year. I’m going to be an RM next year so I didn’t get much a choice when it comes to where I’m living.

I’m a freshman right now, and I was lucky enough to get on-campus housing for my sophomore year because I’m in a living and learning community. The vast majority of my friends, though, were denied housing because of the number of freshmen coming in, since they are guaranteed housing. So I’d say it’s reasonable to hope for housing, but it can be really difficult.

I have on-campus housing for next year, but I literally won first-choice housing.

If you want to live on campus after freshman year, you’ll probably have a spot (unless it’s one of the years where they knock down Bates or something), but it just probably won’t be where you want to live. Almost everyone wants either their own room or apartment style after freshman year, and there’s only so many of those available on campus, and a lot of them are taken up by freshmen. There are like 6000 beds on campus and about 4500 freshmen… With 20,000 total undergrads, that leaves a lot of people off campus.

You can kind of ‘guarantee’ yourself housing if you try to sign up for one of the learning communities, that way, if you get in, then you have a space, and if you don’t, then you have a second chance to get housing… so it doubles your chances of finding housing.

As of a couple of days ago, I had friends who went ahead and signed up for housing in places like Bates and South Tower, because those were the only places left, but a lot of them have decided to move off-campus, because they didn’t get apartment (or even suite) style, and are just waiting to sign their lease before they cancel their housing.

Housing at USC is pretty much a nightmare and I really wouldn’t expect to live on campus after freshman year.

@AugGirl
where is the off campus housing? thx

Off-campus housing isn’t run by the university, but there are a few things near campus.

Popular student apartments are:
Aspyre
The Lofts
University Oaks
The Woodlands
Copper Beach
Riverside
The Retreat

and some other places.

I also have a lot of friends who rent houses or duplexes/triplexes off-campus, too.

There is an Off-Campus Student Services office that can help you find off-campus housing as well as possible roommates. Their website is [Off Campus Student Services | Off Campus Student Services](<a href=“Off-Campus Living & Neighborhood Relations - Off-Campus Living & Neighborhood Relations | University of South Carolina”>Off-Campus Living & Neighborhood Relations - Off-Campus Living & Neighborhood Relations | University of South Carolina) and phone number is 803-777-3366. They’re a newer office on campus, but they will be a good resource if you’re concerned about second, third and fourth-year housing.
