Hi i would be an incoming freshman for fall 2011. Wanted to get some opinions on dorming in a single. Pros/ cons etc. Are single rooms secluded in a particular part of a building or are they integrated with the rest of the dorms- doubles and singles on same floor? I am referrjng to dorms on ellicott on the north campus. Also are the floors coed? Will it still be easy to meet people in your residence halls i you get a single? And hows the party scene at UB?

Pros: you don’t have to deal with any roomates, more privacy.
Cons: harder to meet people.
There are some “secluded” singles in the towers where there are only a handful of rooms on the floor but for the most part they are mixed in with doubles/triples/quads. The towers are coed by floor since there is only a single bathroom on each floor and all the other buildings are coed by room.

It’s harder to meet people living in a single, although if you are on a floor with other outgoing people who keep their doors open it is easier.

The towers at Ellicott are all coed by floor?

@jojoyohan thanks that was quite helpful. What would you recommend? I want to have a social life but at the same time i love having privacy and im goingto be premed so my own space to study is also important. #soindecisive

Yeah, they only have a handful of rooms per floor and one bathroom so they only have guys or girls on each floor. On the lower floors (5th or 4th and below) the towers are connected to the buildings around them which are coed by room.

Maybe I should make this a bit clearer by saying not all the buildings in Ellicott are towers. The one I live in is not and therefore there are also girls on the floor. Certain buildings are towers that have 10 floors and aren’t as big as the other buildings. They are coed by floor since they can only fit one bathroom on the floor.

Freshman year isn’t too bad. I’m Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and I breezed through it. I actually met most of my friends through my roomate so having him was actually helpful to meeting people. I would personally not choose a single for freshman year, and if you decide that you want to get out of your room, you can always try and get a single/room change for Spring.
