I was accepted a couple weeks ago early decision and want to get my housing deposit in right on the 15th, however I am not really sure where the best place to live for a freshman would be. Should I live on North or South Campus and in which dorm complex? I don't know if it makes a difference but I intend to take a pre-health undergrad program and would rather be in a dorm with a good social atmosphere as opposed to a stricter academic atmosphere. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

You want to be on north campus in Elliott. I’d suggest a 2 person room.

I would second the recommendation for the Ellicott complex on North Campus. I’m actually in an all Freshman building in Ellicott right now and it seems rather social even though my floor is mostly single rooms. Governors is also open for freshman on North campus, but it’s themed more for an academic community and the building itself is rather confusing. Ellicott just seems nicer to me and it is also where the new dining hall is located!

Most freshman courses are on North Campus and the few people I know that dorm on South say it is a little annoying to take the shuttle between campuses to get to class.
Later on in your major you might want to dorm on South, I believe that’s where most of the medical and health classes are taught, but for Freshman year it’s probably not necessary.

Do most people get doubles? I actually signed up for a double in Elliott, but put as my other 2 options triples and quads. Do most people save the 900 dollars and go with a quad?

Posternutbag…my son gave a room deposit on Jan 16th but hasn’t heard back yet. Did you get an immediate response after making your deposit? Thanks

No, it was a few days probably closer to a week. It was sent to my email with a username to use.

DD is a freshman in Elicott Quad. She is in a quad. Originally when she requested a quad because her friend who she wanted to room with wanted one, I had doubts. But it all worked out great. The quad room is actually very large and easily fits four students. She actually is now very good friends with all of her roommates and they all want to live together next year. I keep telling her how lucky she is that all of her roommates get along.
And someone already stated that the new dining hall, which I understand is beautiful, is in the Elicott Quad.

FreshmanMom2013 - A few days after we paid the deposit I called UB campus living regarding the delay in receiving the housing reservation logon email (they had originally said 2 - 3 days) just to make sure there wasn’t a problem. I was told they were experiencing some delays this year but she checked the system with my son’s UB person# and confirmed that he was in the system with the correct deposit date. The email came a few days later (Almost 2 weeks after the deposit). Just in case you’re not aware - it’s the date all deposits were received by that drives the order in which the student’s dorming preferences are considered, not the date they actually create the preferences.

Thanks UBmom2012!! He finally got it… :)

How many floors are in each building in Ellicott? Is there an elevator or is it a walk up? Thank you.

Ellicott is made up of several buildings that all interconnect. Some of the buildings have 3 floors and some have 10 - and yes, they all have elevators.
