Dorming issue please help!

So I applied for a lease for an apartment near my university and the application was complete. But hen I got an email saying my guarantor wasn’t accepted due to their credit. I have no aunts grandparents or others to support me so what should I do? Anyone else go through this?

Are you able to live on campus? There is no credit check like for a lease. I know my son’s college hasn’t started to do room assignments yet.

I can’t because they put on the waitlist. :frowning:

Look for a roommate situation where they already have an apartment and need to fill a room. Facebook class of whatever for your college or maybe your college has an off campus housing site.

“Look for a roommate situation where they already have an apartment and need to fill a room.”

Good plan. When I was in university I was either in a dorm, or in a house or apartment where someone else had the lease. I didn’t need any credit because it was someone else whose name was on the lease. I think that I found both through a university housing site. This was a long time ago but there must be on-line equivalents today.

You guys are the best thank you. I found a girl who has a lease and she wants a roommate. I can’t get a lease but am I able to live with her? I want to pay for my own part of the rent too.

Be careful living without a lease. You don’t know this person and can be kicked out randomly in the middle of a semester. You both can still sign something, just find a lease template online. Good luck

Also when you pay rent make sure you get receipts from her. You can buy your own receipt book and have her sign them.

^^^if you pay by check, ach, paypal, make a note of what the payment is for oh the transfer and you’ll have a confirmation of payment.

Will the landlord / owner know that you are there?

Yes. Can someone explain leasing in terms of me being the roommate? If she gets the lease she says I also have to sign a lease. Does she mean do I have to sign my own or sign hers?

Ask her is she means that you will also sign a lease with the landlord or a sublease with her. Either way, you need to know the terms of her lease, including when it expires. You need to know if you will pay the landlord 1/2 (?) of the rent or pay her. Get a copy of the lease to be signed and read it and have a trusted adult read it, also.

So I spoke to the owner and according to them every student needs to sign there own lease. I’m very confused. She said these exact words " Each student that lives in College Station has their own private lease for their apartment. There are no group leases. Does that answer your question?"

Yes. That is good for you and simpler. You will be dealing directly with the landlord. Ask for a copy of the lease to review with your parents/guardians/adults. Always read every contract before you sign.

Pay attention to when the rent is due, how you pay it, late fees – don’t be late!, number of days notice to be given before you move out, required deposit and what needs to happen in order to get it back, who is responsible for what repairs, things that are not allowed such as a pet or painting the walls.
