Dorms and roommate selection search

Curious how this has went for others in the past. My son wants to stay in the contemporary halls but when searching for a roommates that is not one of the criteria. I guess you just have to send a message to each one you think would be a match to see which type of dorm they want to stay in?

Also, if you want to stay in contemporary halls, what are the odds of getting one as a Freshman if you just paid for housing today? Any idea?

Thanks for any help!

you will be assigned a time slot to pick, We first picked a bed in the hall that he wanted. It was an extended room in Burns hall. Once a bed is picked in the dorm, you can hover above the bed and it will give you the name of the student and you can make contact then. The order of selection is when you paid the housing deposit.

I’m trying to get a feel for the housing selection process. My son was assigned a time of noon next Wednesday to choose his housing. This just happens to be his last day of high school, and he is in a class at that time. Is this something that is a frenzied process and he needs to do it right at that time? Do I need to excuse him from school, or see if his teacher will excuse him from class to go somewhere to do it? Or, can he do it at any time after that time? He also hasn’t found a roommate yet, and the official time to select one and choose a room together has already passed. If he happens to connect with someone (not likely, he isn’t really motivated to do this for some reason) before his selection time, how would they get placed together? Would he just have to try to choose an empty room and hope his roommate can choose the other bed before someone else does? He is interested in a contemporary hall, strongly prefers an in-room bathroom. He is going to be a Provost Scholar, and I see that Minor Hall is listed as the Provost Scholars Living Group. Will he be guaranteed a choice in that hall if he wants, or is that something he would have needed to set up or apply to earlier? He is also going to be a fellow in the METP program. Are there other halls he should be considering? I’ve heard the contemporary halls might be less social than the traditional. So many questions from this new college Mama!

in 2014 my son was in the fastrack program and Burns hall was one of his choices. He picked an extended room as they are a bit bigger. He just waited for someone to be his roommate. They can hover over his name and it will list his contact info. We saw that the kid had picked that room and that’s how he ended up with that roommate. I would go contemporary. Stockard is a zoo. 11 floors and pretty wild. Minor is a bit more studious. The new Halls RH1 and the residential college are also good ones. He should be able to get in Minor Hall, its not something that you have to get on the instant his slot opens. My daughter picks May 15th. Make sure you pack his clothes in the portable plastic dressers you can slide right under his bed, It saves a lot of time. Get one of those green adjustable dollies from Sams club for 80 bucks that you can help load things in on move in day. Get there 30 minutes before and unload everything on the curb and park the car. Its humid, so dress cool.

My son’s room choice time slot opened today and nothing available in Minor or any of the contemporary halls. He’s pretty upset. The bathroom thing is a big deal to him. I guess I mistakenly thought being a Provost Scholar would assure him a spot in Minor.

Don’t worry. You’re not the only one. Have you called housing? Tell them he is a provost scholar. My daughter and a bunch of others had no room at the Inn also and ended up in traditional. Housing said so many kids requested contemporary this year, it sold out fast. Keep monitoring this summer as more kids pick rooms. The dorm is just a small part of the picture.

My sons time slot was Tuesday, May 16th at noon. At that time there were only 4 rooms available in Minor Hall for Provost Scholars. He was lucky to get in one. For future people reading this pay the housing fee early and do the room assignment as soon as your time slot opens. Do not delay if you have a building preference.
