Room and Board at AU is a stunning $14,000 a year(I know DC is pricey but wow!). Does moving off-campus help save money for students?

Also I understand AU dorms are undergoing major renovations, when I visited an unrenovated dorm a few months back, I was unimpressed; have these renovations made any dramatic improvements?

What are the best dorms at AU for freshman?

and lastly, I’m pretty sure Clark and Roper Halls will be used for University college, are they any good?

This year, University College is in Anderson Hall. Anderson Hall is huge and entirely freshman. Many of the freshman are in Anderson and Letts (right across the courtyard.) I believe Honors freshman are in Hughes. They are in the process of building a new dorm on the North side of campus

My daughter lives in Anderson and it seems to be a pretty standard college dorm. The built in storage unit holds an impressive amount, in my opinion. I guess it depends on what you are comparing the American dorms to but, based on our tours of college campuses last year, I would say that American’s dorms are above average.

My D lived in Letts freshman year and was a UC advisor (free room plus salary) in Roper for soph year. Both were adequate. Roper rooms were a little bigger but did not have built in storage. She moved into an apt. for junior year. Four people in a two bedroom. She paid around $750 a month (incl utilities) so we definitely saved money over the dorms. She covered her own food costs from a part time job, but I don’t think she spent more than $200 a month. So, yes, it saved us money to live off campus.

The dorms at AU are roomier than those at many schools, and seem to have comparatively generous storage. My son and his roomie didn’t fill all the available storage freshman year.

The campus is small, so nothing is far from anything else. But my son really liked living in Anderson freshman year (he was in a UC) because it is so ideally located by the library and the student center/dining hall.
