Are the dorms at American really that bad? Living Learning Communities?

Hi there. My son is applying to American but have a few questions about the dorms. We have heard very mixed things about freshman housing. Many people say the dorms are disgusting (mice, etc…). Just wondering what people’s first hand experience with the Freshman dorms are? Does not living in a “Living Learning Community” dorm make it harder to make friends? Do people ever get assigned a single if they have documented reasons from a doctor? Is there a way to ensure you live in Centennial Hall? Thank you so much!

Hello! I’m a freshman at AU and I currently live in Anderson Hall. My hall is newly renovated, and I believe it is very nice-looking and clean. In my opinion, the dorms are very spacious and the facilities and lounges are always neat. I live in a cohort and it makes it easier to make friends since your get to know people very well. Also, I’m sure if there is a good reason your son has to live by himself, they will allow it, although it is not common. Lastly, I don’t think there is any way to ensure a spot in Centennial, but I believe if a person accepts admission sooner, they have more priority in their preferences for living. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information @rita459. What Cohort do you live in? What activities did you do together?

Single rooms are available in some residence halls. They cost $1,300 more per semester.
