Dorms for Freshmen?

I recently got accepted to Mines and since it is my #1 and I have wanted to go here since I first visited, I know that the next thing I should do is figure out how the Dorm situation works for incoming freshman. However, after looking all over their website, I still feel like I don’t really know the dorms or how it all works…

Is it a first come first serve basis? Is there a preferred dorm that is ultimately better due to location/facilities/ect? Any information at all or personal experiences are welcome  I just want to hear someone else’s experience versus just looking at the website (the internet can only get e so far…)

All of the newer dorms are really nice and have different types of layouts depending on what you like. They are on the South side of campus close to the rec center and cafeteria. There are some older dorms in the center of campus by the bookstore, they are not as nice.

First, Erik Buol is a bitch. He’s a residence life coordinator, which means he is the person who you report to if you get reported for any RA write ups, so if he manages the building…then try not to get written up.

The trads…well they’re all the same. No air conditioning. You can hear through the door. No kitchen. But it’s close to the periodic table and to your classes and I hear that it’s more social than the nicer dorms(elm, Weaver, aspen, maple)

The nicer dorms(elm, weaver, maple, aspen). So aspen is usually only for first generation students and it’s right next to the fraternity houses. Maple has their own bathroom in their room, but I personally don’t like them because it takes up space in the room. Maple’s air conditioning adjusts on its own to the temperature of the room, so some people had to shine a light on the temperature sensor in order to make the a/c kick on. People living in maple generally tend to be a little more outdoorsy, but that was just this year. Elm is the most updated dorm. It has community bathrooms but many use the single bathrooms that are around. The rooms are pretty big and nice. People in elm this past year generally tended to be more outgoing and there were a lot of people who joined Greek on elm this year. Weaver’s room I hear were on the smaller side.

How much of an issue is not having air conditioning in the rooms in the trads? Are you sweltering, or just mildly warm?
