Dorms for Women

Hi all. There was a recent thread about the various dorms for men, but not for women. My daughter was sent an emailed survey, which she thought was fun until she was asked about dorm preferences. She hasn't had a chance to visit, so she looked at the Hendrix website, made sure she didn't pick an all male dorm, and randomly selected from one of the others. Gulp. I really hope that this isn't the info ultimately used to place her she should decide to attend. So ... what are the reputations and physical details of the three women's dorms?

According to a review from a website I cannot name on these forums, Veasey is the “party” dorm, while Couch (the co-ed dorm) is the “hippie” dorm. Don’t know about the other two.

I think she checked Galloway Hall – it looked historic and maybe a little more architecturally interesting.

We only looked at the male dorms, but Couch was definitely the hippie dorm. When you send in your deposit there is a form to fill out to choose the dorm. Will your daughter be attending Hendrix?

I think I checked off Couch Hall- I’m okay with co-ed dorms, and I’m a bit of a hippie myself.

I’m a fresher (they use this term in the academic books) at Hendrix, and I’m bored. So here you go.

Galloway is seen as a sophomore women’s dorm, but spots for freshers are opening because of increasing numbers. The building and rooms are really beautiful, but it seems to be rather…cliquey. I don’t know that many freshers from Galloway. One who lived there told me the sophomores weren’t particularly welcoming to freshers. Though their current senator is a fresher and she loves it, so you could be fine there. It’s rather hard to get into because so many girls like it for its large rooms and structure. Galloway is the smallest of the dorms, as it is only two stories tall.

Raney, my dorm, is predominantly freshers now (though it wasn’t years before) and it’s pretty small. I swear…the rooms are the smallest, everything is called a fire hazard (only dorm in which you can’t loft the beds…getting materials to even bunk the beds is difficult), little storage space. I think it’s the least nice building-wise. That deters a lot of people from living here, and its reputation. Raney is known for being a nunnery…filled with quiet, shy, nerdy girls. I almost didn’t choose it because of that (and I’m rather nerdy). In years past, no one hung out in the lobby, people kept to themselves or only hung out elsewhere. Raney was the place you came back to for sleeping. I think some parts of Raney are still like this, but our class has made it pretty lively. I don’t like the building, but the people are absolutely awesome. I would hate to leave it. If you like partying, it’s perfectly fine. If you like spending weekends doing nerdy stuff, it’s awesome as well. Raney is supposed to be the sister dorm to Hardin.

Veasey is predominantly freshers as well. It’s known for being a party girl dorm, the sister dorm to Martin. It has much more storage and it’s a newer dorm than Galloway or Raney. The rooms are nicer and it’s seen as the fun dorm, which lures a lot of people into choosing Veasey. I’ve gotten the impression it’s a much…cattier dorm than the others. A bunch of girls I know who lived in Veasey ended up leaving for Couch. It’s probably also the biggest female dorm. …This dorm should probably be described by someone who lives in Veasey and likes it. I just have trouble casting it in a positive light.

Couch is the only co-ed dorm, and it has a lot of non-freshers. It is known for being a hippie dorm, but it’s mostly just really chill and it has a strong sense of community. They’ve had a lot of problems with drugs in the past, but it seems like they’ve cracked down on it a lot in recent years (now it’s more associated with Martin). The rooms are really big, it’s the newest (or second newest, not sure) dorm, and there is lots of storage. Unlike the female dorms, there are no sinks in the rooms. It’s probably too hippie for my taste, but I have plenty of friends there and it’s not a bad place to hang out. The parties from Martin tend to spill into Couch though. So if you hang out in Couch lobby on a weekend, you’ll find many drunk people chilling about.

No actual partying occurs in the girls dorms though. The parties are usually contained to Martin and spill a bit into Hardin and Couch.

ADSRSM refers to the partying quite a bit. How much of that is there at Hendrix? Would you say that it’s probably about the same as any other college?

Oh dear, I hate to give off that impression. It’s probably the same as any other college, and it’s restricted to weekends for the most part. I never go to those parties (neither do most of my friends), and I still have tons to do.
