Does anyone know anything about the male/coed dorms at Hendrix and which one is the most desireable?

I think Martin and Hardin are the two boy dorms and it seems as if Couch might be coed. I’ve been in Hardin … first impression was that it smelled like mildew. Room sizes seemed ok. I think Martin might have sinks in the rooms? It is the older of the two, but seems to be a bit nicer in my opinion.
Hendrix is wonderful but the dorms there don’t seem very impressive.

Thanks. Do you know anything about the coed dorm?

I don’t … I know I was in it during a campus tour but have no real memory of it. I think it might be a smaller dorm??

Couch is the coed dorm. The girls and boys live on different floors. My daughter lived there during freshman year (she’s a senior now) and she loved it! I’m pretty sure she told me Martin Hall is the party dorm. Couch is known as a place where lots of students (including those who don’t live there) like to hang out. I know many lively discussions take place there. The rooms are not big, but my daughter and her roommate arranged their room in a way that gave them optimal space. There are bathrooms on each hall. Have you visited the campus? My daughter is an admissions intern and is actually in charge of the residents halls tours and I’m sure she would be happy to share any information with you.

Well there are three boys dorms to pick from: Martin, Hardin and Couch.
Martin and Hardin are boys-only and couch is mixed. Im a sophomore here so i think i can give you a pretty good look inside them.
Martin’s the party dorm, unless its a special event or party, all the parties are at MArtin. On the weekends, the first floor is a mess of people and beer and crazy costumes and good times. During the week there is still the laid back attitude of sitting around and not doing much of anything…these boys don’t do homework where anyone can see, i think they have ego issues. If you like constant interaction with other guys and dont mind strange mystery noises at odd hours of the night or consider your self an "any times a party time"type of guy, Martin is for you.

Hardin Hall is the nerd hall. Its very quiet and doors usually stay closed, but everyone is nice and very chill…weekends are about the same. Hardin is next to Martin (like 100 ft apart), so party overflow definitely can run into Hardin, but only one like one or two rooms in on the first floor. Guys here are very studious, often shy, but there are usually a pretty rockin group of people just handing out in the lobby There’s some couches in there, a tv with video game stuff, a pool table, and a brick patio out back so its a cool place to be if your more…laid back. If your more of a “party time is reserved for the weekends” kind of guy or just want to chillix in your dorm on weekends instead of get out and go crazy, Hardin is a good choice.

If your a hippie, live in couch. You know what i mean.

OK, I hope this was helpful!
I am a girl, so i dont have a bias on dorms (thats a good thing, sometimes your dorm affiliations are a big deal), but i have spent A LOT of time in both, i was ridiculously social last year so i have a good grasp of life there, er, here. Im a sophomore now and live out in the new apartments and im only on campus for classes, but from what ive seen things haven’t changed!
Let me know if you have any other questions about Hendrix!

Great info… How did you get to live in the new apartments as a sophomore?

Also, could you share what your experience has been like at Hendrix…

I covered the girls dorms in the other thread, so I figured I should give my input on the boys dorms. Hendrix dorms are all pretty old, so I wouldn’t expect to be terribly impressed with any of them building-wise. Still a fresher from Raney.

As stated, Martin is the party dorm. It’s the brother dorm to Veasey, as in Martin men are generally supposed to date Veasey girls. Martin has four floors, and the first floor is mostly underground (said to be sinking into the Earth from all of the sin). First floor is almost always trashed from parties, and the whole building smells of alcohol. (Parties in dorms are pretty restricted to Martin. Keeps control.) They have sinks and the rooms aren’t bad, but the sinks kind of look like they were just awkwardly placed in the middle of the room. They’re pretty big, and a friend of mine had a single in there. Fourth floor Martin isn’t too terrible if you’re not super into partying, but a few of my sophomore friends had to pay some serious hall fees for all of the damage done to the hall from parties last year. Like Veasey, I have a bit of a bias against Martin. I see it as a building full of frat boys.

Hardin is the brother dorm to Raney, as Hardin boys are generally supposed to date Raney girls. Brother-sister dorm thing isn’t that significant. It’s more of an observation than a mandate. My boyfriend is from Hardin, so it may apply moreso to those who align with dorm stereotypes. Hardin has a certain funk to it as well, especially on the first floor, but first floor Hardin has a lot of spillover from Martin parties on Friday nights. First floor can get messy and noisy on weekends from that. Hardin has a ton of nerdy guys, as the stereotypes indicate, but it also has some guys who are just more moderate in their partying than Martin. Like I said on Raney, you can spend your weekends partying or just playing video games and it’s not a big deal. I know Hardin much better than Martin because I am what they call a Hardin Lobby Rat. The same people are generally in the lobby at all times, somewhat to the dismay of ResLife (they think we scare people off). Hardin doesn’t actually have its own gaming systems. I often store my Wii in Hardin and it’s seen as the lobby Wii. We’re a nerdy, but friendly clan, so there’s always an abundance of video games in the lobby and we welcome newcomers. The rooms don’t have sinks, but they’re pretty big compared to Raney rooms. Sliding closets, lofted beds. Even when you deloft the beds, you have a pretty decent amount of space.

The description I have for Couch in the women’s thread is also useful. As for it being co-ed…only one floor is mixed gender. This year (I’m told it alternates), first floor is all male, third floor is all female, and the second floor is divided. Some corridors of second floor are male, some female. Couch has many hangout areas, a strong sense of community, and it’s generally a really chill place to be. It’s not as nerdy as Hardin, but not as party filled as Martin. While most of the hippies live there, you don’t have to be a hardcore hippie liberal to live there. The parties from Martin will somewhat spill into Couch lobby though. Not unusual to see drunk people in Couch lobby on a Friday night.

None of the guys dorms are particularly small, in room size or building size. Dorm loyalty varies a lot and seems to be dying off, which is a pity to me. I do know Hardin and Martin still occasionally have football games against one another. They’re still rivals.

There’s a large move with housing at Hendrix to push non-freshers into apartments. I figure I’ll fall victim to it and leave the dorms next year. Getting into the new apartments isn’t that difficult as a sophomore. Getting into the new houses is pretty impossible though.
