I saw this thread in the “College Life” forum and I thought it was pretty interesting. Keeping in mind the quality of the dorms at Penn depending on whether the room is a single or a double, which one is better to get as a freshman?

single first year if you don't have trouble making friends, the room with good friends for the rest of the years.

I've heard different things. If I got Hill I'd probably want a single. Aren't the doubles there really small? For quad it would depend on the hall. I thought because quad is pretty social already maybe a single, but I hear some of the halls with just singles are even too quiet. Any of the other houses maybe a double because they aren't supposed to be as social.

Freshman don't get singles in hill. I think.

Anyway, I highly recommend a single.

you can apply for a single, but not everyone gets one ... based on my sister's experiance, definetly apply for a single !!!! It doesnt mean that you will not have a social life - Penn is a very social place.... it just means that you have a place for yourself for the moments you want to be alone ......and plus, you can avoid the whole " I might hate my roomate/what should i bring vs. what should they bring/ "everything else that comes with having a roomate"!! Hope this help

Freshmen can get singles in Hill. Do not get a double in Hill or you will be sorry.

I loved my double in Hill. I highly suggest getting a double.... it's a good experience to live with somebody else and all that. I, for one, did not like my freshman roommate. We didn't talk much, we didn't do much together, we didn't have the same friends at all. Yet I wouldn't have wanted it any other way... it forced me to adapt to living with somebody else, being conscious of somebody else, etc. It was also great to have somebody in the room whom you could vent to or whatever when you had a bad day, or could talk to into the night if you felt like it. It had its ups and downs, but it was definitely a good experience overall.
