Dorms to watch out for

Shemarty what IHUM are you in?

Finals week has indeed been rough.

what are some of the quiet dorms??? with not much partying and all??

I think generally the four-class dorms are quieter, though I may be wrong. A lot of the dorm complexes (Wilbur, Stern, etc.) are very large and are composed of many separate dorms, so the environment really varies between individual dorms. I'm in an all-frosh dorm in Wilbur and i personally like it a lot (good food, extremely close to libraries, close to the quad, large double rooms, great people, great atmosphere). The all-frosh dorms tend to get the loudest.

I'm interested in Wilbur because of the food. But why did Rooster rank it as bad? And what's so great about FroSoCo? What should I do when I fill out preference to ensure that I get the dorm I want?

Eh... those dorm rankings are a little bit skewed. I know people in Branner who absolutely HATE it (loud, noisy, ugly, etc.). And I know other people in West Lag who love the quiet atmosphere. It's kind of hard to "rate" the dorms... it's what you make of it (have I been saying this a lot recently?). I'm in Rinconada in Wilbur and love it. Also, note which dorms are in the center of campus life (i.e. Wilbur, Stern, Branner) and those which are on the far West side of campus (FroSoCo, and the SLE dorms). Worrying so much about housing is pointless. Once you get placed in your specific dorm, you're going to think you could never have lived anywhere else :D

Hey Kupolu, who hates Branner? That's very strange. Unless it's Kevin.

And for anyone who says Branner is ugly, plug "Branner Hall" into google image search, baby. It is the most beautiful dorm to exist. Lag dorms are nice from the outside, inside is eh. Wilbur and Stern are just flat out ugly, inside and out.

In Branner it absolUTELY depends on where you live in Branner. On my hall we have a couple who like to drink, a couple who smoke, and a handful (the girls and a couple guys) who love to dance to some good music. We're a fairly quiet hall- and yet really social. The problem is that I rarely leave my hall because those are the people I'm close to, and my room is the social hub of our hall... but we always have our doors open, as opposed to 2nd floor, where the doors are rarely open, but they party more. And yet, only once I have I ever noticed noise upstairs to the point of bothersome, in my entire three months of living there.

The all-frosh dorms in wilbur and stern are pretty tightnit, which can be nice, but some of them can seem very elitist... Branner is very much open to everyone. Unless they come with their friends to eat in our dining hall and pretend like we don't exist. I have at least one friend in almost every single dorm.

Also the SLE dorms are not at all far West Side, they're practically on the row, dead center. FloMo is a relatively nice place to live, it's ugly but it's very central and there is quite a varied selection of freshmen. It just sucks to have to make the ride back up (Stanford is somewhat sloped) if you're really tired at the end of the day. But they have a very nice lowkey pre/party scene, too, and are less than a 5 minute walk from any reasonably good party.

And I completely agree with kupolu's last statement.

Oh yeah, and from the previous page, Jamesah goes to Brown... so you can take his warning against frosoco as what pretty much every bay area prospective student is told- and we have a LOT of advisors. There isn't a single freshman from Gunn in FroSoCo- and we sent 20 to stanford this year.

I'm in FroSoCo this year and it rocks! just providing a little balance...:)

plus...I was in Visions of Mortality for IHUM this quarter so:

does it suck? NO...it's a very interesting course with great material/lecturers
is it hard gradewise? Most definitely, especially for people like me, who aren't exactly the greatest in philosophy/fuzzy stuff in general

efilsiertaeht:

Ehh, I'm not a big fan of the vaulted ceilings in Branner. The dorm feels more like a Mexican druglord's mansion than a place I'd call home (but that's just me). I think I'm slightly partial to Rinc ;-)

Conclusion to profros: stop worrying about housing.

since when were mexican druglord's mansions undesirable?

Old info...still valid?
Any update/agreement/disagreement with original post?

Yes, I'd like to post some disagreement with the original post.

Wilbur is actually quite nice. The rooms are very big and comfortable, and the food is great. Location's not bad, either. I'm there and love it.

Stern, IMHO, isn't that great. It's kind of ugly ("defensible only from a military point of view"), and I'm told the rooms are small. I was also unimpressed with the dining hall.

West Lag is an interesting case. As a freshman, it's not good to live there because you get "minidoubles"--rooms that used to be singles, but were converted to doubles for frosh. They're tiny, as you would expect. For upperclassmen, however, it's highly desirable. I'm trying to draw there next year.

Can't tell you much about the other dorms.

As for IHUM, the philosophy ones can actually be great. I was in both of them (Visions and Fate of Reason) and loved both. I think I've had about the best IHUM experience you can have for a techie.

do you guys know of many people who said they wanted to be in an four-class dorm and got stuck in an ethnic house (which is considered a four-class dorm too, according to Approaching Stanford)?

Hey, doe anyone know how is the grad school housing? Is it better that the undergrad? How is Escondido Village?

Branner Hall looks awesome!
