Dorms @ UCSB?

I forgot to mention that San Nic definitely has the best views since it is a high rise right next to the ocean, just as long as you get on the right side of the building. Manzanita also has some nice views at the farther end of the complex, but I believe those rooms are for the older students and transfer housing.

What about San Rafael. I'm a transfer student...how are those dorms and would you recommend them over Manzanita?

San Raf is nice too. A lot of transfer students live there and it seems like the people there have fun. I would recommend living in IV next year though if you're a transfer student. You wouldn't have any trouble meeting people living around you and you don't have to worry about RA's. I am living on DP next year but was thinking about living in San Raf if I didn't get a house. I would rather live in a San Raf suite rather than a Manzanita dorm though.

Thanks for the information, Falkster. Very infomative and helpful.

is it allowed to take "guests"?

You can have guests. You are supposed to sign them in and they are only supposed to stay for 5 days at the most. I had a friend stay for three and a half weeks at the end of Winter quarter and no one said anything.

When I stayed at FT over the spring insight weekend, I never had to sign in once. And my friend and I rarely walked in with a resident. We just went straight to the room. The only exception was coming in late one night when they locked all the doors. Then we had to get a resident to come open it for us.

Its not that you have to sign in when you come inside the dorms. No one cares when you come inside. Its just if you have a guest, they are supposed to register with the front desk saying that they are going to be staying there. But no one ever does that.

doesnt matter if female/male???

Doesn't matter...even a drag queen can get in lol

:D
thanks

Yeah...didn't matter at all. When I stayed the night in Cal's dorms it was like a prison compared to SBs. You couldn't ever get in without a key, a resident had to sign you in, you had to have picture ID, and the resident could only sign in a certain number of people at once. And this happened every time you went in or out of the building. It sucked!

All the dorms are good. FT is good but you have to commute. The others are on campus and thus very convenient. I lived in San Nic. The views from the top floors are excellent. Compared to other dorms I have been to such as SLO, UCSC, UCSD, SDSU, UCLA, USC, the dorms are just as good or better. The dining commons are great at UCSB compared to other schools. It is not exactly gourmet but better than the competition.

I'm going to be an incoming freshman this comming fall and was wondering which one of the dorms have the larges proportion of freshman.

definitely FT. it's got about a third of the freshmen.

Which dorms do you guys recommend because i like to party but i also like to get my work done. I've always been the kid that parties with the dumb kids and then has classes with the nerds.

I really want to get in Manzanita Village, does it help if I choose an interest floor?

From what I've read, interest floor housing is done first, so yes, it would help if you chose an interest floor.
so, in a word.. yes.

i am currently living in FT on the substance-free floor, and i think it is great. the people here are all really cool, and really about half the floor does drink. the only difference is you go to into IV if you want to party, which is cool when you have to work/study/sleep.

the bus system is really good (and free if you get a registration sticker off of GOLD) and runs between campus and FT pretty regularly. otherwise its only like a 10 minute bike ride. even if you dont want to bike to campus, bring a bike anyway. they're really helpful if you end up with back-to-back classes on opposite ends of campus, or you oversleep a lot.

people ***** and moan about the food, but, honestly, its not that bad. maybe not what you're used to, but its pretty decent.
