Dorms with single rooms :-)

On one of our many searches for mostly easternish, mostly LACish schools with a high "quality of life", I landed on a college where they have singles with private baths. woohoo! ;-) Now I can't remember which one it was.

I'm thinking with all the adjustments that go along with going away to college, not having to deal with sharing a small room with a stranger would be a good thing. At least for me, getting a single after my first semester at college was a relief! I wonder how on earth I'd do a search for colleges that offer a fair percentage of single rooms??

There aren't many schools that guarantee singles to freshman, but a few come to mind where it is not unusual for frosh to get singles or singles within suites: Bryn Mawr, U Chicago, Haverford.

Bryn Mawr's all female, right? Are you female, sushi? :)

But on PrincetonReview, it DOES seem most women's colleges have great dorms...

I was going to suggest U Chicago, but Hanna beat me to it. Check out their housing site- the dorms are awesome. The site gives you room sizes and # of singles and doubles in each. Snell-Hitchcock is the best IMO, but the other dorms are really nice too.

Thanks for the responses! Maybe it was Haverford I'd previously come across, because I did like Haverford for other reasons as well. U of Chicago looks interesting. I wonder how Chicago rates for safety among large cities.

About half of the freshman students at Columbia get a single--it's a little harder sophomore year, but still a possibility.

i forgot the percentage, but some large majority of students at Williams get singles

something like 70% of all the rooms at Pomona are singles. At most public universities, anyone (including freshman) can pay about an extra $1000 to get a single, if you register early enough.

Most freshmen will have singles at Williams this fall, as one of the upperclass dorms is being converted to a freshman dorm. (No private baths, however: that's pretty luxurious!)

Cornell has quite a lot of singles for freshmen, but they cost $800 per year more than the rate for doubles.

after freshman year, all students at connecticut college get a single.
