Dorms

Which ones are the best? How good is mountainview ?

From what I hear Mountainview is one of the better and more modern dorms but it requires a little more of a walk than some of the other dorms

Also, the new newing buildings are supposed to be very nice.
There are a few videos on youtube showing what the communities are like

Newing: [YouTube - Life@Binghamton - Newing Tour](<a href=“Life@Binghamton - Newing Tour - YouTube”>Life@Binghamton - Newing Tour - YouTube)

There are a few more but those look most appealing to me.

Thanks. I enjoy walking so that should be good enough for me. What are the rooming options there though?

I think this is what you’re referring to:

Newing [Binghamton University - Residential Life - Newing College - Room Styles](http://reslife.binghamton.edu/newing/room-types.html)

CIW [Binghamton University - Residential Life - College-in-the-Woods - Room Styles](http://reslife.binghamton.edu/ciw/room-types.html)

I don’t think I’d like to a triple so I’m definitely leaning towards the first two.

there have been a number of threads about binghamton dorms – for more info, you can do a search to see what others have said. here is basic run down of the dorms –

dickinson – oldest of the communities, only one within “the brain” (ie the road that loops around campus). a lot of people put it down because it is the oldest and its also the last of the fully corridor style dorms – ie hallway with all rooms sharing a communal bathroom. but a lot of people who live there love it – lot of community spirit. living on a corridor is very social – you get to know everyone on the hall. also very convenient to about everything since it is inside the loop. in the next few years, now that the New Newing is complete, they will be building the New Dickinson outside of the loop next to Newing – not sure when that is supposed to be completed.

Newing – As of next year all the New Newing dorms will be open – the newest of the dorms. A modified corridor style – rooms along a corridor, but three double rooms share two bathrooms. Old Newing had the reputation of being where a lot of people interested in frats lived. Only time will tell how its reputation now changes since the newness of it will undoubtedly make it very desirable. a decent walk to the lecture hall and most classrooms. will also have a brand new dining hall.

College in the Woods – mixture of corridor and suites – each 1/2 floor has double rooms, a triple, and two suites. Near the center of campus, but up a hill from everything. (except for mohawk which is newest ciw dorm and is all suites)

Mountainview – mostly suites. Very new. Suites are huge. Not “far” from lecture hall and classrooms, but up a hill (even more so than college in the woods). Reputation is that its not that social – you have to make an effort to meet people not in your suite.

Hinman – all suites – smaller suites than Mountainview. Similar reputation for suites being less social. Very near the lecture hall and classrooms.

Hillside and Susquehanna – apartment complexes – freshmen cannot live there, but transfer can. Nice apartments, but pretty remote from rest of campus.

My guess is that Newing and Mountainview, as the two newest, will be the most populat. CIW has also always been a popular choice. Realize you are not guaranteed to get your choice. Each year people spend a lot of time worrying about which to pick – some end up happy, some disappointed. But once you move in, most people end up being happy with whichever community they end up in. They each have their own traditions and community spirit.

Just an FYI- there are triples in Mountainview. Only freshmen are assigned to them, but they are carpeted with their own bathroom.

I live in CIW and I love it. Benefits of having a corridor-style hall, but you still get them if you want to live in a suite.

CIW definitely seems appealing. I’m coming in as junior transfer so thankfully I assume I won’t have to worry about triples? Thanks for the info.

You almost certainly wouldn’t be in a forced triple (those are almost exclusively given to freshmen), but you could be placed in the designed triple (corridor) which is actually quite large. They used to be the floor lounges, but were converted into rooms a while back. They are oddly shaped, but are really spacious.

There also used to be suite triples as well (for five person suites) but those are now doubles (making them into four person suites).

Can you explain more about the designed triple? What exactly is the difference and are there still 3 beds in a room?

What is a realistic estimated walking time to get from a central point in each community to the central points in other communities, and these other destinations?

1) New Newing to central points in: Dickinson?___ CIW?___ Mountainview?____ Hinman?___
Lecture hall? __ University Union?_______ West gym?______

2) CIW to central points in: Dickinson?___ New Newing?___ Mountainview?____ Hinman?___
Lecture hall? __ University Union?_______ West gym?______

3) Dickinson to central points in: CIW?___ New Newing?___ Mountainview?____ Hinman?___
Lecture hall? __ University Union?_______ West gym?______

4) Mountainview to central points in: Dickinson?___ New Newing?___ CIW?____ Hinman?___
Lecture hall? __ University Union?_______ West gym?______

5) Hinman to central points in: Dickinson?___ New Newing?___ Mountainview?____ CIW?___
Lecture hall? __ University Union?_______ West gym?______

Is there some other way (eg bus) that would more routinely be used for some of these trips?

What is a reasonable estimate for % freshmen in each of these communities:
Mountainview
New Newing (guess)
CIW
Dickinson
Hinman

Dreamworld- There are five walls in the designed triple (it is a really strange room shape), but there is plenty of room for three beds (with drawers built in), three desks, and three closets. No bunk beds and no sharing desks/closets. There is also an overhead light (unlike the regular rooms) because it used to be a lounge. Plenty of floorspace in the middle of room as well with two sets of windows.

There are apparently (according to the Reslife website) doubles that were former lounges as well (five-walled corner rooms). I’ve thought about this and it seems that buildings with fire entrances on floors that are lived on (so only Onondaga and Cayuga) have smaller than normal former floor lounges- making them unsuitable for triples but larger than normal doubles. I’ve never met anyone who lived in one of these, but they apparently exist.

Monydad-

Dickinson is closest to CIW, Newing, and the Union. Newing is closest to Dickinson. CIW is closest to Dickinson, the Union, the Engineering Building, and Mountainview. Mountainview is closest to CIW and Hinman (it’s on the hill so is a minimum five/ten minute walk to class). Hinman is closest to the Lecture Hall, the Library, and Mountainview.

The West Gym isn’t near anything (Hinman is the closest with a 10 minute walk, everything else is 15 minimum). The longest walk will be around 20 minutes (if you crawl).

As far as freshman percentage, I can’t really estimate it. They reserve a certain number of beds for freshmen (plus whatever is left over from the returning student sign-up) which can vary greatly. In CIW, I would say that Oneida has the greatest number of concentrated freshmen (because of the Learning Community). It’s more spread out in other buildings.
