Dorms

We recently toured Mary Washington with our son. We were very impressed with the academics and "private college" feel. The campus was beautiful with the exception of the dorms. We were shown a freshman dorm,(Monroe)and the room was a triple. Not much space and no air conditioning (VA in August has got to be hot). The lobby was beautiful and spacious. I would love to hear from current students and their experience with dorm life.

MY DD is a freshman this year at UMW and lives in Custis Hall. There are a few air-conditioned dorms but not Custis. It was hot for the first three weeks and then things were fine. My DD will be an RA next year and eligible for a/c. When I offered to buy her one she ask me why since it "wasn't so bad."

My DD wanted a small liberal-arts college and narrowed the choice down to Dickinson and UMW (we loved Randolph-Macon Woman's but couldn't get DD past the "woman's" part). At Dickinson, it would have been hard to have made ends meet financially. At UMW, I barely notice the tuition.

There's been a moderate scandal this week since the new president was charged with DUI twice in a two day period! However, charged isn't convicted. I heard him speak early in the year and believe him to be an impressive individual. (Bill- say it ain't so!)

If you want an excellent academic value and are accepted, I'd suggest giving the school serious consideration. One caution is that there are no frats or sororities and the athletic teams are mediocre. If you student wants to party then this may not be the best choice.

I also lived in Custis this past Fall....The dorms are actually some of the best I have seen with my many visits to other colleges. Custis has pretty big rooms with no Air Conditioning, but if you have allergies like me you just need a doctors note. Definitely something I would suggest.
