dorms????

hey i am movin into the dorms in jan....(spring admit). Wondering if you had any suggestions on what i need to bring with me...this is all very new...thanks :D

Hey there,

Welcome to Cal!
I suggest using the search tool and looking up key words such as "dorm" and "moving in".
You'll find a lot.

Hope this helps!

Welcome calculatorlover!

If you're moving into Wada (Unit 2) I'd suggest a multi-spectrum desk lamp. Concrete walls and ceilings can get a bit depressing after a while.

The Cal Housing website has the basics for dorm necessities:

Living at Cal - Welcome to Cal

Good Luck!

P.S. If you're driving your stuff up try renting a rolling furniture cart from U-Haul. It saves a LOT of time (but they have a limited number of carts available at the various Unit offices).

Units are like jail cells (lived in Unit 2 over summer)
CKC has huge rooms but is too far away
Foothill has great rooms but is too anti-social (live in Foothill this year)
Stern is anti-social

Frankly, IMHO, speaking from experience, Bowles is the best of the dorms

Units aren't that much of jail cells. Just become friendly with your floor and hang out in the lounge! Bring sweatpants.. and I think thta's all you need.

they are, especially when your roommate is a mother*ing piece of *

thanks guys ur link and searching the site helped a lot. I hope my rommate is nice lol :D :D

a crappy roommate can make dorming an absolute nightmare. good luck with who you get.

Yeah, both of my roommates are unbelievably messy. Living in a crampled triple in the Units with messy roommates is a pain.

Units really aren't that bad. I am in a Unit 2 triple and am perfectly happy with it (although I expected myself to hate it). I am basically only in my room to sleep and occasionally study. Plus, if you're in a unit triple, you end up saving ~$2000.

yea i am in a triple...the sucky thing though is for people who come in spring they tell us who our roommates are the day we move in

I heard the triples are bad news in the units, but what about the triples in Wada? Are they any different or are they the same?

Wada is in Unit 2. It is quite nice, but there aren't very many freshmen there from what I know. Also, it would be very tough to get housing there.

I already have housing there. They gave me a triple though. I'm gonna shoot for a double next fall.

^^ Have you looked into Channing/Bowditch Apartments? We've got some people moving out (my flatmate is leaving for a fraternity room and, as far as I know, he hasn't contacted the Housing Office... I just went back up to campus yesterday and saw his stuff boxed up and ready to go... He's local and we're not required to move out during break so he is definitely moving out). Check into it. Contact Ellen Levitan in the Housing office. I think that we're all in doubles here (but it costs approx. $900/mo).

calculatorlover: they won't tell you your room mate even if you call in and ask? Do they tell you your building or room number?

i called and they said they are not releasing that information until the day we move in. All i know is that i am in a unit 3 triple...i dont even know what floor or room ....

if you're moving into a unit 3 triple, then my guess is that you might get a corner room triple. (those at the end of the hallway) which is a lot bigger than those in the middle of the hall. So, it shouldnt be a problem with you feeling cramped (unless you're the messy type)

have fun packing! =]

check bearfacts, it should have you information already because the dorms opened up on Sunday
