Can anyone speak to the issue of double-majoring at Barnard and fulfilling the distribution requirements? Is there support for double-majoring? Can one course count for two “ways of knowing”?

A complete explanation can be found here:
[Barnard College, Online Course Catalogue](http://www.barnard.edu/catalog/cur/liberalarts.php)

It is certainly feasible to double major at Barnard and many students do that. Note that when explaining which classes can be used to fulfill the “Nine Ways”, on the page I linked above it says that
It also is stipulated that each course MAY be considered for more than one of the required “Ways”, but the student must choose which one she elects to apply it to.

My daughter did not seem to find it burdensome at all to get all her “Nine Ways” requirements fulfilled while completing her Neuroscience degree. In fact, it’s a direct result of these requirements that she “found” her interest in and passion for neuroscience. When she started at Barnard, she was set on studying dance and english; after taking a required intro to Psych course (a pre-req for the two semesters of Psych she originally planned to take as her only science), she “discovered” the field and study of neuroscience and then proceeded to take extra semesters of things like Organic Chemistry!!! We sometimes wondered who kidnapped our daughter… :)

My DD was thrilled because one of the courses she took just to satisfy distribution requirements yielded an A+ and a stunning GPA last semester!!! (Yes, I know, a very shallow report, but it was fun and a complete surprise. And that teacher has followed her up, asked her to lunch, introduced her to famous folk in her field and written an awesome evaluation for her.)

Daughter also found love economics thru the nine ways and is now a double math/econ major. Never planned to do that originally

Many thanks for the replies. It looks like it will be possible, but just barely, given the nature of the two majors she wants to pursue. Hopefully she’ll have a better idea after she speaks to the department chairs on Monday.
