As a junior who’s already completely in love with Barnard, I’ve been spending a lot of time considering what I might want to major or minor in. I have a good grasp on what I want and even though I know it may be early to think about, I’m considering double majoring in English and Art History and minoring in Religion. This is all hypothetical, of course, since I know it’s a bad idea to be so set on a certain course of study that you neglect pursuing other subjects, but considering I’m passionate about those courses right now, would this even be possible? My mom double majored and had a minor from Vanderbilt so I know it’s not totally unprecedented, I’m just wondering if it would fly at Barnard.

It’s definitely possible, but you will be warned time and again how hard it will be. Fitting in all the requirements to do the three together is just a pain. You might realize that you just want to take classes in your interest field without officially making it a major or minor. There’s nothing wrong with that. Also, classes at college are (at least in my experience) so vastly different from high school, so I realized I didn’t really know what I was interested in because I never could’ve taken an anthropology or religion class or whatever at school. Don’t be surprised if you just want to take a few religion classes without declaring a minor—which truthfully is mostly for fun anyway.

Again, it’s still possible. It’s just a lot of planning to make sure your fulfill your requirements. The Nine Ways of Knowing aren’t burdensome, but it can get tricky when you’re trying to plan your life around getting your science requirement or whatever. Also you might realize you are interested in SO many things there isn’t possibly enough time to take all of the classes you want, which is my problem.

By the way, I’m taking an art history class and a religion class right now and they’re both amazing. :)

Phedre, is it possible to double minor (with a single major)?

I have never heard of someone who has double minored. Then again, I guess it might be possible. It could be just as satisfying to take a lot of classes in that field and have the freedom of not needing to fulfill yet another set of requirements.
