Double Major-Accounting and Poly Sci?

I’m really considering joining the FBI once I’m out of college and I was wondering what you guys thought about majoring in both accounting and political science. My thinking on this is that 1. The extra major would push me past the 150 credit hours required to take the cpa exam and 2. political science could be helpful for fbi or state department jobs couldn’t it?

Would this plan (if it’s even good) be better than going and getting a masters in accounting (if I really like it)?

Thanks

Sure. I can see how both majors would work towards your goal. I’m looking into accounting myself and I just went to a seminar where the lady works in the FBI (or some close line up)

Any ways, her whole presentation revolved around how the FBI hired a lot of accounting majors so they could monitor businesses, etc.

A dual major is good but obviously not neccessary. Most likely you’re going to lean towards one the farther you get into college. If I were you, i would keep an open mindset and look towards the dual major and see where things go

The answer is: it depends.

First you need to check the requirements of the college you attend. It can be difficult to major in one business subject and one liberal arts subject. You need to look at 1) the college’s core curriculum 2) the business school core curriculum 3) the requirements for an accounting major 4) the requirements for a poly sci major. It may be an easier path to minor in poly sci, but that is your call. It could take more than 4 years to double major but it is to an extent depending on the school, if you come in with AP etc. credits and so forth.

I’m a CPA and my S is a CPA. In terms of a double major v a MS in Accounting that also depends on your interests. If you decide to go the public accounting route then the double major in poly sci won’t do much for you in terms of being recruited by the big accounting firms. Currently the Big 4 do not require a MS degree so that is not an issue, but more and more people going into accounting do have one because of the 150 credit rule. My S was recruited to his Big 4 job from his MS program so it helped him in that way.

Depends on what sort of thing you want to do in the FBI. Are you trying to get into the white collar crime division or what?

Thanks for the reply, you made a lot of good points. If you don’t mind me asking, how’d you get the extra credits required for the CPA. Did you just take some extra classes?

Ideally i I would like to do counterintelligence but I can’t find a ton of info on what that division specifically looks for. I’m sort of getting the feel that most be don’t start out in that division but maybe that’s incorrect.

That experiance with the FBI you had is pretty cool. I’ll be sure to keep an empty mind
