Double major BS CS and BA Math

I plan to take double major in CS and Math because I think minor in math does not support enough for my CS major and it may be worthless because the courses overlap too much (if I take math minor, I just have to take about three more math class, if I choose one math-related track in my CS curriculum, I automatically got the minor). Therefore, I want to take a math major instead. However, double major with BS CS and BS Math is so tough; it could make my GPA down badly and I may graduate later than one year. So I think about BA Math choice which is more doable and could not hurt my grade much. However, a lot of people say that if employer see a BA degree in my resume, they would not want to look at it anymore even you get double major. I'm not sure that's true or not, but this make me confuse to make decision. Could somebody give me advice please? Thank you so much

P.S: My school is Drexel University

Don’t listen to those who think that a BA will “harm” you. Yes, a BA is usually for more non-techy majors, but not necessarily, and that’s why you have a title for your degree. Anyone who sees a math major, even if it does say BA, will not care that it says BA–math majors in general are well-respected (math is, after all, the “queen of the sciences”). They will also know–or at least assume by that point–that some programs grant a BS in math, others a BA.

For example: at Berkeley, you can get a BS or a BA in computer science. You’d think, wouldn’t you, that the BA students wouldn’t make as much money. Wrong–they actually make more on average than BS students. The reason in this case is that the BA program focuses solely on the CS aspect of the field (and is in the college of Letters & Science) while the BS program focuses more on things like electronics and physics (and is in the College of Engineering).

Point is, having a BA in math won’t harm you. If you’re interested in majoring in both, then go for it. You’ll be successful either way.

(I’m a CS major with a math minor by the way)

Note that all students graduating with bachelor’s degrees in math or physics from Berkeley graduate with Bachelor of Arts degrees. Meanwhile, if you meet someone with a bachelor’s degree in history from MIT, his/her degree will be a Bachelor of Science degree.

Regarding Drexel in particular, it looks like their BA in math program includes 59-63 quarter credits in math, while their BS in math program includes 80 quarter credits in math. This is about 33-35% and 44% of the 180 quarter credit total required for graduation. For comparison, Berkeley’s BA in math program requires about 52 semester credits in math, or about 43% of the 120 semester credit total required for graduation.

As a practical matter, it is not likely to make too much of a difference (especially as a second major) when employers and others are looking at it, unless you intend to go to graduate school in math, in which case, you may want to take more math courses, or at least choose the most important ones for graduate school preparation, if you are doing the BA in math program.

phantasmagoric…

I think you should swap your major and minor and make math the major. I really don’t have a real reason why though :-)

^ too late now, I’m starting a CS PhD program in a few months ;)

Oh wow, good luck with that.

Thanks for the reply

I do not intend to go graduate school. I just want to get a good job after graduate. Therefore, I just want to choose the best way to become more advantage than other candidate. Like I said, math minor is just too few math course because of a lot overlap classes which could not help to strengthen my resume much. Meanwhile, BS Math is so tough and I have to take too much math class. My main major is still BS CS, and I just want to take math major as a support for my CS, so I don’t want to go too deep in math and spend a lot of credit on it. I want to spend credit on other CS elective course instead. BA Math is most reasonable choice for me now, but I just afraid the term BA will reduce my resume strength while I apply for job.

Could you help me this question? Between BS CS + math minor and BS CS + BA Math, which one will be better? If I choose BS CS + math minor, I may take another minor which may be CE. So with BS CS plus 2 minor like this, is it better than BS CS + BA Math? Thanks

I’d do the BS CS + BA Math.

Thanks for your answer.

I decide to go with BS CS + BA Math as well :)
