I'm almost done with my first semester of college as a UNLV Rebel. I'm currently a declared Civil Engineering major but I have had strong interest in the Business Management major as well. To sum up all of my thoughts and feelings on my foreseen future: Civil Engineering is the far-out dream career, Airline/Airport Management is the realistic dream career, one major for each. I am so 50/50 split down the middle on choosing which to pursue and an advisor from the business college suggested that I choose one or dual major in both, a minor in business won't suffice me apparently. I am STRONGLY considering the dual major option and I have begun constructing a 12 semester/6 year plan and its looking like doing both with overlapping gen-ed's will total me at a whopping 216 credits. Just Civil would have me at 142 and just Business would have me at 121 so its look like the dual major will add roughly ~75 credits. Any thoughts on this? Should I do it? If not, why shouldn't I? Thanks for any feedback!

From what I hear you should just go to get an MBA after getting your civil engineering degree. Probably about the same amount of time and it would give you even more opportunities.

I’ve heard that suggestion once or twice before @jimmyboy23 and I’m also hearing that it doesn’t matter what major you complete for your bachelor’s so it might be a new avenue. I just don’t know how abrupt the jump is from Civil Engineering undergraduate student to Business Adminstration graduate student, I’ll look more into it though, thanks!

Anyone else?

MBA students come from all kinds of undergraduate backgrounds. However, many MBA programs prefer applicants to have had work experience after their bachelor’s degrees.

Why is civil engineering a far out dream career, while airline / airport management is a realistic dream career?

Take a look at this thread from an OP who is having difficulty finding a job in aviation administration:
