Would double majoring in CS and Businees or Finance or something like that be beneficial? I want to go through the software engineering track and I feel like having a degree in business would help push me up the ranks to more managerial level positions at most companies earlier in my career. My ultimate goal is just to become some kind of exec at a tech company. However, I am not confident in how well these majors compliment each other especially in entry level software engineering positions and the difficulty in double majoring in such different disciplines. Would getting a CS major then getting an MBA be better? What about just a minor in business? Any ideas and advice would be extremely appreciated.
Most technical managers in computing organizations do not have business degrees. You can take some business courses as out-of-major electives if you want, but it is not worth jumping through hoops to add a second degree. Indeed, some people may see a second major in business or a large number of business courses a negative when hiring a new graduate to a technical job, since that can be a signal that the person is less interested in the technical job itself than as a stepping stone to management.
If you are interested in being in a technical job, get the CS degree and get technical experience. It will take a few years before you can get to management ranks anyway (usually). Then you can decide if an MBA is the right degree of if you want a different path.
A 2nd business degree will not net you anything. It would be better to do an MBA in Information Systems (easiest MBA major for CS grads).
