Double Major

I was wondering how hard or if its even possible to double major in Computer Science and Business (specially management). Also i was looking at a career in Computer and Information systems manager which is why i was thinking majoring in business management would help. But if anyone can give me some information I would greatly appreciate it.

It depends on the school and how many requirements each major has.

However, if IT (as opposed to software development and QA) is your preferred job and career, a CS major is not really necessary. Selected CS courses in operating systems, networks, databases, and security (these typically require completing the intro courses, though) supplementing some other major should be sufficient for that purpose. A lot of IT people have even less technical background than that, but it shows in that they find it difficult to adapt to new technologies and unusual problems.

Take a look at MIS.

You definitely could double major in CS and Business, but the real question is whether that is the right move. I’d suggest looking at other majors (like MIS, etc.) that may mesh with your interests and goals better.

I think I would first major in CS, if you are more interested in that path, and after several years of working, you could go and do MIS.

What is it that you want to get out of a business management major?

Well in reality I’m not 100% sure what I want to do as a career and I know that a major in CS will open a lot of opportunities for me because of the different areas and ways it can be applied. That is why I want to major in CS because I love technology and how it advances.

@geoAnd I just figured that if i do lower level programing work right out of college like most CS majors do that if I have a business degree that it will look better for a possible management position so yea.

oh and im looking at UK if that helps. and I don’t think I would really want to go back through the college again just to get a second degree, I want to just do it all in one shot.

Could you major in computer science and minor in business? That might make things easier.

I won’t suggest minor until you hit your sophomore year. I think work experience is more important and gets more attention than your minor, at any time.

From what I heard, BBA is almost useless unless you have been doing internship and have a lot of work experience throughout your study. Business majors have difficult time finding jobs because there aren’t that many business positions available. Your best bet is really go out and work.

I think if you live in places near big city, you will find more CS jobs. If you live in the middle of nowhere, like rural area, you will find very little CS jobs.

Blueboy, I really don’t know how much good a general management degree will help. Of the business majors, Accounting and MIS are the most natural companions to computer science. Also, after you start your career, there may be opportunities to pursue an MBA with your company kicking in some dollars from a tuition reimbursement program. Just wanted to give you a couple ideas.

hhmm I understand what you mean. I’m just going to be a high school senior this school year so I want to know as much as possible before i go to college.

What would a big city be considered? because while I don’t live in a rural area I’m unsure about job prospects for CS majors in my city
