The title says it all. Is it possible? I've researched all options on UCLA.edu.
Communications it not possible as a minor, yet film is.

I'm confused about double majors/minors and such...

I would be applying as an English major because I've done all the perquisites and I would choose it over communications, but would I be able to add on Communications as another major? If you have an experience/advice it would be appreciated.. Thanks.

Well a double major with minor would be excessive. Beyond what people’s perceptions are here on CC, both Comm and English are well regarded majors to employers and grad schools. So…do you like writing more or don’t mind communicating to an audience? I would say go for what you are more interested in BUT also what you think you need more improvement in as well. I think UCLA’s comm department is really good and incorporates more film/media theory than UCLA’s English program does. You may be better off just taking a Screenwriting and Writing for F/TV class if interested in that. I’m just giving my honest opinion from my experiences so no hating or think I’m trying to personally prove something like some here accuse me of.

I don’t know what school you attend but SMC has a great Comm department and many of the 7 pre-req’s you may have already accomplished any from the following…

-Fundamentals of Speech
-Mass Communication (& impact on society)
Micro Econ (and/or macro and/or poli econ)
Elementary Stats
(Intro to) Sociology I or General Psyche
-and a linguistics, Soc, Cultural Anthro class related to Comm

That’s what I was looking for. “Excessive.” I’m not sure how much larger of a workload taking on double majors or minors is, so that’s why I was looking for someone experienced. As for my major, I will have taken many, many more classes for my English major as well as my career goals are writing oriented. Also, I am looking to minor in film because I want to try and get into UCLA’s screenwriting MFA program.

Participating in two majors (and a minor) at UCLA would carry quite the workload and be very difficult to complete in 2 years. I think your goal and focus is fantastic and wish you the best in luck towards success in such endeavors. My thoughts that if you want to take a major that would best gel with film and screenwriting, I’d personally go with claiming Comm as your major. You can always find work, even for yourself with a laptop and earn a decent living if are a good writer and know the history and principles of advertising and script creation.

After the 3 core you would be able to concentrate in Mass Communication and be able to take F/TV criticism and analysis plus history of cinema, documentaries, and broadcasting. The closer you move your English background and interests towards Broadcasting the better off you would be to work in the business side of film, TV, media and advertising just in case Screenwriting by itself doesn’t earn you a solid income.

I’m not sure but gather you are already capable of analysis and compare and contrast papers in English. What media related Comm classes will help you with is in ‘visual literacy’ and how to decipher the message within propagated images, culture, linguistics, media and advertising, whether for critical analysis or for advertising strategy. A large part of the media business is still advertising, especially in low economies, when new out of the box approaches are generally welcome. I also tend to think if you learn and develop ‘visual literacy’ skills on the psychological, political-societal, aesthetic, and compositional (mise-en-scene) communication level it would better assist you in translating the written word to visual medium. I love English, even though suck at it and more of a reader, but Comm classes may be more interesting and diverse in the sort of writing you will be doing.

If you don’t apply as COMM and aren’t accepted into comm from the get go, I don’t think you can major in comm period, not even by adding it as a double major

The question wasn’t actually directed towards whether or not if I could get in. I have a 4.0, over 40 units completed, tons of EC’s (including 40 hours of work a week, Big Brothers Big Sisters and secretary of the honors society at my CC), and more than enough perquisites completed/in progress. So it’s not a matter of applying for a “less impacted major.” (English is actually also very impacted, by the way.) I want to make sure I’m enrolled as an English major and yes, shock, ADD on communications.

I was looking for people with EXPERIENCE of adding communications on as a double major or the workload. I am not stupid, I know communications is impacted. Thank you to those who actually helped with my problem :)
