Double Major in German and Engineering, what schools would be a great fit?

Can anyone give me some recommendations what schools would have great German and Engineering departments? We are not interested in Ivy league schools. Also, merit aid and an honors program is very important too! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa has a Graduate Fellowship program with Mercedes Benz (whose US factory is less then 20 miles away) for engineering majors.

http://uanews.ua.edu/2010/03/mercedes-benz-launches-graduate-fellowship-program-with-ua/

Yes my son has been accepted and we will be visiting next week! It is at the top of our list!

I’d look into University of Oklahoma too, especially if National Merit might be in the picture.

Lafayette College is a liberal arts college that offers engineering degrees, and it has its own study abroad program in Germany (although coursework is in English): <a href=“Study Abroad · Engineering · Lafayette College”>http://engineering.lafayette.edu/study-abroad/

Boston University also offers study abroad in Germany for engineering students (again, the coursework is in English): http://www.bu.edu/abroad/programs/dresden-engineering-program/

I doubt you’re going to find that many engineering programs with honors programs. Engineering is tough enough as it is.

In order to hit real fluency spending a long stretch immersed in the language is helpful. Something I suggest you look into is the impact of a semester (or, better, a year) abroad would have on time-to-degree. If you can afford 5 years of undergrad it is not so much of an issue, but it may be difficult to do this at most schools unless they’ve integrated technical courses into their overseas offerings. I know a person who did this while at Stanford (see <a href=“Making Time for Study Abroad”>https://undergrad.stanford.edu/advising/student-guides/can-engineers-study-abroad) but it doesn’t sound like you are looking at schools like Stanford, nor are they going to offer merit aid

UA just signed exchange agreement with the University of Applied Sciences at Hochschule-Esslingen.

<a href=“UA starts exchange program - The Crimson White”>http://cw.ua.edu/article/2014/09/ua-starts-exchange-

Thank you so much for the update NoVADad99! It looks like UA is a great fit! I hope I am not overestimating my son’s abilities in German. He has 22 credits that will be transferring to UA as well as his AP German class that he will be taking in the Spring. I am not sure exactly how the AP credits will work in terms of credits. In addition, he spent 2 weeks with a German family while attending a private gymnasium and did very well with speaking German. I think he will be ready for UA! With his academics and current coursework, I hope they see him as a great fit.
