Double major! In search of school similar to Oberlin in California

Hello,

I'm a musician interested in studying a degree in some type of history or soft science, and a second degree in music performance or theory. I'm looking for a setting similar to Oberlin, but would like to be in California. I've grown up in the midwest my whole life, and have had enough of the weather. My top priority is to get a great education - and to be happy. I feel that if I were to stay in the midwest, Oberlin would be my top choice for sure.

I have a 4.0 GPA and have been admitted to top conservatories (Julliard, CIM, San Fran)

Need help!!!

I would suggest posting this on the music major’s forum. The people there are very helpful with this kind of situation. They helped me out.

The school most similar to Oberlin in California probably is Pomona (in the LA area). It is more selective than Oberlin and does not have a music conservatory. However, it is part of a 5-college consortium, which expands the range of available courses compared to what a single LAC can offer. Occidental is another California LAC.

Of course, there are many other schools in CA, including Stanford and schools in the University of California system.

Could you explain how you’ve already been admitted to Juilliard? I don’t believe they’ve even held auditions yet for next fall. And, there is no program comparable to Oberlin for a double degree on the West Coast. However, look at University of Puget Sound in the Northwest, and USC which both offer performance degrees and have strong academics. There are a multitude of threads on the Music Major forum about double degree pursuits and which universities are supportive of it. Also, be sure to read this post from Peabody’s website which has the best explanation of the different musical and academic paths one can take: http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/conservatory/admissions/tips/doubledegree.html

Thank you for all of the suggestions! Really hoping to find the right school for me.

Sorry for not elaborating - I auditioned last year, and took this year off to indepedant study.

So (since it is now March) you’d be taking yet another gap year? You’re considering schools for Fall 2015 admission?

I’m considering schools for spring of 2014.

*2015 sorry

Occidental is the first school to come to mind. I would also check out all of the Claremont Consortium schools (especially Pomona and CMC). California is pretty limited when it comes to LACs.
