I'm a junior in high school and and starting to look at colleges. I'm interested in both the sciences and music, and I want a school where I would be able to do a double degree with classical guitar performance and a science such as physics or neuroscience. I have a 4.0, and im in the top of my class. Off the top of my head my extracurricular activities are...
gay straight alliance
mock trial
chemistry club
badminton
tea club(yup, my school has a club where you literally drink tea and talk about it.)
science national honor society
mu alpha theta(math honor society)
latin honor society
national honor society
Tri-M(music honor society; perform a concert every year)
a couple of different orchestras I play viola in (school orchestra, pit orchestra, FAME orchestra, all county, side by side(program where you play with members of the baltimore symphony orchestra))
Guitar and Viola private lessons.
Anyways, my top school choice right now is oberlin, but im having trouble finding some other schools that would be a good fit. Something at least fairly selective with good music and science and a double degree available. If anyone could recommend some schools that would be good to look into, Id be very grateful. Thanks in advance!

The University of Rochester would be right up your alley.

Oberlin sees a lot of cross-application with the other top mid-western LACs: Take a look at Macalester, Grinnell, and Carleton. On the east coast, I’d look at Vassar and Haverford. Reed in Portland. They aren’t identical to Oberlin - but enough overlap that students who apply to one, will apply to many of these others.

I am under the impression it is pretty hard to double major at Reed due to the thesis requirement for seniors (but if someone else knows differently, please pipe up!). What about Lawrence? They have a conservatory and good sciences (especially physics). I think you are going to have to look hard at the classical guitar performance component and see where you can get good instruction, as that might not be very common.

Take a look at Bard and UCLA. UCLA is hardly similar to Oberlin but I know of two students who successfully did Physics/Music double majors there.**).

**BA Music and BS Physics…It took both students 5 years.

Check out these eight schools:

Carleton
Grinnell
Dartmouth
Lawrence University -like Oberlin, it has a conservatory
Vassar
Wesleyan
Pomona
Yale

All have excellent science programs and very good to excellent music.

You should post this question in the Music Major forum. because if you want to get a BM in Classical Guitar along with a BA or BS in a science, it will limit your choices. For instance, Bard Conservatory which otherwise would be perfect for you, as it requires all music students to pursue a second degree in the college, does not offer classical guitar. You may find you’d be happy just studying guitar privately, or through the school, but not getting a degree in Performance. Schools like Yale, Williams, Swarthmore, Vassar and Princeton come to mind for that - all with strong music programs.

Compmom’s daughter plays Classical Guitar and knows a lot about which schools of music offer that. Also, please review this invaluable summary from Peabody about the differences between double majors and double degrees [Peabody Institute - Conservatory Admissions: The Double Degree Dilemma](http://www.peabody.jhu.edu/doubledegree)

There are many many threads in the Music Major forum about double majoring and double degrees. Search or browse through the forum for many posts about double majoring, as well as classical guitar.

If you decide that you don’t want a double degree, but still want a school strong in music or with the ability to work with musicians, consider

Connecticut College
USC - much easier to cross register as compared to other large universities
any in the Claremonts (Pomona, Pitzer, etc.)
