Hey y’all, HS junior here. The time’s come that I have to get serious about what I wanna do about college and where I’m applying to. I’ve had my heart set on art school for a while now, I’ve dabbled in pretty much every art medium you could do and I’ve always known I wanted to be an artist in some facet. But I’m REALLY serious about fashion design. I love fashion, I sketch design ideas all the time, I taught myself how to sew, I make clothes and costumes for myself and my friends, it’s like a part of me. But I feel the same way about theatre and performing, I’ve been onstage my whole life and it’s not something I would ever wanna give up. Designing and performing are my two biggest passions and my favorite hobbies, and given the opportunity I’d love to make a career out of either. And that’s where I’m struggling. I’ve been stuck between the two as potential majors, but more than anything I just wanna be able to gain more real-world experience in both. I’ve been checking out schools and found fantastic ones that offer one or the other, but I’m wondering if there are any art schools (or schools at all) that have solid programs in both theatre/performance and fashion design where I could double major. Or would it even make sense to double, considering they aren’t majors that would traditionally be paired together? I just can’t imagine choosing to give up either, and it’s been bugging me that I can’t find a school that offers both where I feel like I would succeed.
Have you considered costume design? That may be a way to blend the two. Check out these links for a little bit of information: https://www.theartcareerproject.com/become/costume-designer/ and https://theater.calarts.edu/programs/costume-design.
How about majoring in one and minoring in the other? I’m sure there are plenty of schools, including “art” schools, that offer a minor in either one of these. That way, you’d be getting experience in both fields without overwhelming yourself with two majors.
