Currently I am double majoring in Business Administration and Economics and will get both a BBA (bachelor in Business Admin) and a BA when I graduate. After taking multiple Econ classes I have begun to hate the major and have reached the end of my junior year and would like to look at other options. At this point I will have the requirements for an Econ minor and I am one class away from finishing my business degree. The other option I’m leaning towards is a Business major with a double minor in Econ and English. I know minors don’t mean much but I have loved my English classes and I will be done with the Econ minor. Since I’m also going into my senior year I don’t have much room to factor in many other options. My question comes down to: is it worth it to stay with the double major or should I abandon the second major and go with the double minors?
If you haven’t already, you might want to speak with someone in your school’s career center about how much of a boost the econ degree would give you in job placement or starting salary. Maybe someone in the English department could also point you towards jobs or careers where an English minor would be a helpful addition to a BBA and you could weigh that against the double major.
If you know the industry or field you’d like to work in: health care, publishing, technology, etc., then consider using your senior year to take additional “background” classes in that field. Sometimes that little bit of extra depth can make you much more appealing in a job interview.
I actually like the idea of a double minor in Econ and English. It’s a common gripe about my major, “accounting” that we accountants can’t write. Which is probably true a lot of the times. I would stop wasting time in Econ and take English. Life is too short to be paying for classes that you can’t stand to be taking, and that you don’t need to take in the first place.
