I'm poli sci major who has 7 required classes left to fulfill the major (and I'm done with all of my GEs). I'm a 3rd year so I have four more semesters to do this. That being said, I have a lot of space left to take whatever classes I want. Since I've already taken a few sociology classes, I was considering using my "extra class space" to double major in that... but I'm not sure if I should since there are so many other subjects and classes at Berkeley that I want to try out (like a foreign language).

I'm also considering studying abroad the fall semester my senior year. (Can seniors study abroad? I know there's a senior residency requirement, but the ls-advising website was a little confusing in explaining that.)

So should I double in sociology (and have very little room to experiment with other subjects) OR should I study abroad (and have space to try out classes from various departments)?

I’m not a Berkeley student, but I vote for study abroad. As cliche as it sounds, it really can be a life changing experience. My study abroad experience strengthened my interest in my major and gave me an idea of what I wanted to study for graduate school, among other things.

Yeah. I’m actually leaning away from the double major. Even though it’s doable, it’d be a lot of work. I think I’d rather use my time at Berkeley to explore other departments/subjects.

So there are no benefits for double majors (in getting hired/getting into grad school)?
