are the departments of political science and art at Amherst strong? Where does it stand compared to political science and art at Williams and Wellesley? Any input will be appreciated as I am currently a sophomore at Wellesley hoping to transfer to Amherst for junior year, and will most likely declare my double major as political science and art. Thanks!

The political science department at Amherst is very strong, and is usually among the most popular majors. The professors in the department are top-notch.

Art is not Amherst's strength at all. If you are serious about art, you might want to think about whether you are willing to do the commuting associated with the 5-college consortium as Smith has a superb and deep art department that can more than fill in the gaps in the Amherst art department.

How far is Smith from Amherst?

Smith is about 8 miles from Amherst. There's a very good bus system that interconnects the 5 colleges (I think that it's free) so it's easy to get around of you fon't have a car..

thanks guys! btw, how far is Mount Holyoke from Amherst? oh, and just out of curiosity, is it true that students from Hampshire often take advantage of facilities and classes offered in the other 4 colleges, cos' i've heard a ton of negative things about that college such as a lack of a decent library and such. Any idea?

I see the least Hampshire students of any other five-college students, you don't have to worry about them mooching - people who are at Hampshire tend to be quirky and like being at Hampshire.

Mt. Holyoke is maybe a 20 minute bus ride, I'd say about 10 miles? I have no idea, really, but it isn't so far.

Mount Holyoke is about 9 miles from Amherst but the roads are less travelled than the roads to Smith so you can actually get to Mount Holyoke quicker than you can get to Smith. If you're driving, Holyoke is about 15 minutes but maybe give yourself 20 minutes to get to Smith (there's bridge over the Connecticut River between Amherst and Smith that's a bit of a bottleneck and sometimes slows traffic down quite a bit).

haha, thanks! regarding the art department at Amherst, is it really that weak? can someone pls elaborate a bit more? where exactly does it stand compared to the arts departments at Williams and Wellesley? thanks again~

Williams is famous for its art department - there's no comparison between the Amherst and Williams art departments but you can replicate the quality of the Williams art department at Amherst if you are willing to go the 5-college route.

You can get a sense as to where Amherst stands by taking a look at the course offerings for its art department:

The 5 colleges in that area are all very close and there are busses to get to them all easily
