Would it be possible to major in both econ and molecular engineering? More importantly, would it be advisable?
Pretty sure no to both. Meng is a huge major and there’s like no overlap with Econ. You could play around with https://canigraduate.uchicago.edu/ and calculate it for yourself, but I doubt it.
Its possible, but they are both very different majors, and usually for very different kinds of people. Meng is mostly people who want to go to a science/engineering grad school, while econ majors lean towards industry or econ grad school.
Yeah I guess so. Now I just need to decide what I want to do.
I’m also interested in double majoring (bio-specialty-in-neuro and music) and although they aren’t both as, well, gigantic as your choices, I asked around a lot during the open house and believe it or not but everyone I talked to seemed to be majoring in Econ and something else. In fact, it was a running joke with my host and I.
Everyone really encouraged me to do both because they said that Chicago rewards passion for your field and hard work. So if you’re willing to really crank through the work, I think you should go for it. Changing your mind after first year wouldn’t kill you if you were to change your mind
Check out the courses but it is probably do-able. The Econ at UChicago has a huge amount of math content so it does make sense that someone inclined to the MENG would also enjoy Econ. We met a triple major at admitted student days–Math, Chem, and Econ. He acted like that wasn’t an abnormal load.
If you are willing to give up sleep and sanity then yes. Both are difficult and long majors with little overlap, and MENG will require lots of lab time. Depending on what you want to do with them, you’ll also be dealing with internships/research + related clubs on the side which takes up lots of time.
