Double major

Hey guys! I am planning to do a Double major and Economics will surely be one of them. I was wondering if my second major should be in public policy or philosophy. I am equally interested in both of them. What do you guys think? Which one would have a lesser course load or more doable? Which one would be more prestigious?

Thanks!

Double majoring in economics and public policy would be a mistake – way too much overlap. Many people regard public policy as econ-lite.

Of course, it might be easy to do if your main goal is to say that you were a double major. Which, by the way, is not a very good goal to have. I want to say that there is no good reason to do a double major, but that’s not quite right. There are a couple decent reasons – like your main interest is something completely unmarketable, like theater or painting, and you feel you need to communicate that you are not frivolous, or you have basically completed one major when you fall in love with a non-related field and want to do a second major to show that’s what you are really interested in. There is no need to double major to impress employers or anyone else. No one cares, or if they do they know that double majoring takes away flexibility from your schedule that you would otherwise use to pursue other things that interested you, or to work on language competency, etc. Just because you are interested in two things does not mean you have to complete the major requirements for both of them.
