Double Major ?

Hey guys,
I was admitted to UMich CoE in the EA round and i will most likely attend. I want to major in aerospace engineering - it has been a passion of mine for a long long time.
Now the issue is that I'm an Indian, and i understand that it has become tough, for internationals, to get jobs in the US, after doing aerospace.
What are the options i have ? I really don't want to give up on aerospace, but if there is no other option i will probably switch majors.
So, should i do a double major ? Or major + Minor combination ? Is there anything else i can do ?

Mech E, physics/applied physics, astronomy also interest me.

Thanks ! appreciate your help !

Computer science or electrical engineering.

uhm so you’re saying a double major or majot+minor won’t work ?
Also i don’t really find CS very interesting :stuck_out_tongue: @fogcity‌

bumpp

You may do double major if you want. I know a foreign student who graduated from Aerospace at UMich several years ago and went to Texas for a job. There are some difficulty in getting a job, but it is not impossible.

@billcsho‌ aren’t engineering double majors overwhelming ? So would it make more sense to major in Aerospace and minor maybe in physics or Mech E ?

It depends on what you double major in. My D is considering ChemE and Material Sci Engr double major. It will only take 14 or more credits for the second major. As she has 33 AP credits and skipped most freshmen classes, she may still graduate within 4 years even with double major. Alternatively, she may do a sequential BSE ChE and Master in Material Science Engineering for probably just one more semester.

It’s most likely a dual major, rather than a double major (meaning credits are double counted toward both degrees). These can be acquired with relatively few additional credits if you choose programs that are similar. I’m considering it for EE / CE. I would think Aero matches nicely with MechE, but you should ask an advisor.

It’s worth noting that while not many additional credits are required (as few as 14), the semesters are significantly more difficult. In my case, rather than two core EE classes (hard) and an elective (easier to make the semester bearable), I would need to take two core EE classes and a core CE class each semester at a minimum.

As billcsho hinted at above, choosing a dual degree also disqualifies you from the SUGS program.

If i do a dual major in Mech and Aero, will i still be able to complete in 4 years ?
And is a dual major (Aero + Mech) very pressurising as compared to majoring only in aero ? @whammer‌

@ss124081 Assuming you have no AP credits (most international students don’t), you may need 1 more semester to complete the required credit. You may still graduate within 4 years if you take some classes during Spring/Summer.

Lots of people are attracted to double majors or double degrees but they take extra time unless you have AP credit. In engineering it may even be a bit longer because of ABET requirements. A second B.S. degree gets you very little in the way of a better salary anyway.

You say you are enamored of the field of aerospace engineering but you have to realize that many people in the aerospace business do not have AE degrees. Mechanical and electrical engineering, as well as physics are valuable degrees for that field.

Since you are an international student, finances and ROI are important. If you want to stay for 5 years, look into co-terminal B.S./M.S. (ME/AE maybe) degrees which give you a better return but if you need to finish in 4 years, just go for a single degree. One possible option is to do an ME degree for flexibility in employment and add as many AE electives as possible.

I think that sounds like a good idea, to do a ME degree and take as many AE courses as possible…
@xraymancs‌

But because I’m very passionate about aero, i think 1 extra semester and some extra effort isn’t a big compromise… @xraymancs‌

@billcsho‌ i can take the AP exam May of 2015. It seems like a good idea to take them !

If you can do it without stretching your finances then by all means.
