DOUBLE MAJOR

I have a passion for spanish studies and communication, but at the same time I love business. do you think I should double major with Spanish and Communications and then go back and get an MBA? or should I double major in spanish and business marketing and then go back for an MBA???

if you know you want an MBA - I’d steer you to the Spanish/Comm combo. I’d consider a minor in one or the other.

should i get experience from business marketing first??

One thing at a time… Your primary focus should be you BA/BS right now. If you want to go to a top 50 school for your MBA, they will require some solid work experience (2-5 years) as well as a strong GMAT and undergrad gpa.

If you target a mid-tier school, there are lots that don’t require work experience - and contrary to what you’ll read most places, it is a viable path. No question you will get more from the program as a more mature student, you just won’t have some of the context yet. Coming out the other side, you won’t be the as valuable to employers as someone with demonstrated success in the work world. That doesn’t mean it is worthless,. Internships and/or a job that you can spin as ‘real-world’ experience will help. You will be 3-5 years younger than those folks You will be much more attractive than someone with a fresh BS. 3 years down the road, you’ll have experience and an MBA, re-leveling the playing field.

The plain truth is, most people find it hard to extract themselves from the work-force 3-5 years in for the 18-24 months an MBA requires. They have houses spouses, kids, etc that forces them to keep their day job and stay somewhat local. That makes part time at their local CSU their only viable option. It is a tough slog many start but, few complete.

I’d encourage you to play both sides and see what happens. While in school, take the GMAT, keep your gpa up and apply for some MBA programs Jr/Sr year. Also interview for post college jobs, see which path makes the most sense then. If you have a good job offer and are confident you’ll be admitted to a top program in a few years, take the job and go back later. If not, head to the program that makes the most sense for you.

Good luck.
